The Credit Union Cherry Blossom Race opened its registration for the 2009 Cherry Blossom Run this morning. The annual 10 mile run takes place in Washington, DC and this year will occur on April 5, 2009, at 7:50am. 2009 entry information and well as 2009 merchandise was made available on the web-site this morning, marking the chance for willing participants to sign up for the 10-mil race, and prepare themselves for a nice event in the spring.
The race itself will be broken up in to six different waves of 2,000 runners each, setting it up based on those who want to get to the front of the line, and those who want to just participate. Runners will all be assigned a color-coded starting corral based on previous race times, and will be given a bib that correlates to that color. The waves will then be released at three-minute intervals to help get all the racers on the course in a timely fashion. This should insure that everyone who wants to run the race will have a good time on the course.
In addition to the 10 mile run is the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 5k Run-Walk. This event is more suited for those participants that want to be out on the course, but don’t want to (or can’t) attempt the 10 miles. This is a more relaxed pace, and will allow walkers to enjoy the course and join it with their friends and family. The 5k winners will receive roughly the same prizes as the 10 miler racers, so if you are into sprinting, this may be the group to start out with. The 5k will take place at 8:40am on Sunday, April 5th.
One other great thing that will be offered at the 2009 Cherry Blossom Festival, is a 1 kilometer run for kids ages 5 to 12. This is a great day for the kids to go out and enjoy the weather, get some exercise, and participate in a fun competition that will award them medals for finishing. It’s a great way for the kids to get out and have some fun, and it doesn’t have all the pressures that might be associated with doing a full 10-mile race.
As always volunteers are needed, so if you are interested in helping out on race day, it can be a great chance to give back. Volunteer registration will start soon after the race has been filled, and will be located at the Cherry Blossom web-site here.
So, if you are going to be in the Washington, DC area, get out and enjoy the weather on race day, and participate in the 2009 Cherry Blossom Run!
