The 2009 Academy Award preshow began like so many years in the past with a fashion show on the red carpet leading into the awards.
I am not a fashionista by any means. I live my life in blue jeans and Harley-Davidson shirts, with an occasional rockin’ mama blouse thrown in for good measure. I haven’t worn a dress since my grandmother’s funeral in 2004. I do have an appreciation for classic styles and the people who wear them. There are certain fashions that will never be out of style.
While looking through the photo gallery of 2009 Oscar fashions on TMZ.com, I experienced moments of “That’s gorgeous” and other moments of “Honey, somebody lied to you!”
I present a bohemian Harley mama’s Review of the 2009 Oscar fashions.
Best Dressed at the 2009 Academy Awards Ceremony:
Anne Hathaway – The 2008 Oscar-nominated Hathaway looks stunning in her elegant gown featuring simple lines and just enough “glam” to catch anyone’s eye.
Jessica Biel – While a deputy TMZ reporter was not happy with Biel’s hair, her gown is stunning. The straight line of the gown is complemented with a simple black clutch and very nominal jewelry.
Evan Rachel Wood – In a contrast to her role in “The Wrestler”, Wood exudes grace, class and glamour in her flowing gown. A small train does not attract too much attention, and Wood’s complexion looks alabaster next to the fabric.
Angelina Jolie – This black gown is gorgeous. Simple and flowing, Angelina Jolie carries viewers back to another time, a time of pure glamour.
“Honey, Somebody Lied to You” About Your 2009 Oscar Fashion Choice
Bridget Fonda – I’ve liked Bridget Fonda since she first appeared as a child in the commune in “Easy Rider”. OK, I really didn’t know her father cast her in his film, but this could explain the muted psychedelic gown Bridget wore to the 2009 Oscar ceremony. I want to stare and see what the hidden picture might be.
Sophia Loren – Sophia Loren is a voluptuous goddess. She represents a lost era of Hollywood glamour that will never be recaptured. I am at a loss to understand the flamenco-inspired base to her otherwise beautiful gown. The golden gown should have been cut off just above the knee so viewers can see that Sophia’s legs are still holding up as well as the rest of her.
Sarah Jessica Parker – I realize that the opening sequence of “Sex in the City” included a shot of Sarah Jessica Parker trouncing around Manhattan in a ballerina-inspired tulle monstrosity that purported to be high fashion. Sarah, the show has ended and no one can force you to wear all that tulle any longer. The excessive push-up effect didn’t help matters any.
Miley Cyrus – “Hannah Montana’s” dress reminds me of the “doll cakes” of the late sixties and early seventies. A fashion doll was inserted into the middle of a tube cake which was then decorated with frosting to resemble a hoop skirt.
There were many other beautiful gowns at the 2009 Oscar ceremonies and many women who need to fire their stylists. Beyonce should be looking for help soon.
