25 years ago in 1985 the popularity of the WWE was starting to take off as Pro Wrestling and Pop Culture meshed for an experiment known as Wrestlemania. On that night one saw Hulk Hogan with the likes of Mr. T, Muhammad Ali, and Libarace as the Rock and Wrestling craze started sweeping the airwaves.
Since than the Payperview has seen classic matches, moments, and more and to celebrate this occasion here are my top 10 Bodyslam Moments in Wrestlemania.
I. Wrestlemania III: Until Wrestlemania III the largest audience was 80,000 for the Stones, but the WWE and Hulkamania “Ran Wild” on that record as a still record holding 93,000 in attendence witnessed classic matches; with Aretha Franklin singing America the Beautiful. Two matches that night would turn Wrestlemania to an annual event were Ricky “the Dragon” Steamboat VS Machoman Randy Savage competed for the Intercontinental Championship in a match that many argue is one of the best matches the WWE has produced, and the Main Event featuring two legends the late Andre the Giant and Hulk Hogan as Andre passed the torch to Hogan with one classic Body Slam.
II. The Rock Vs Hollywood Hogan: Hogan cameback in 2002 as a member of the NWO and unlike the version in WCW where he was hated on this night on Wrestlemania against “The Great One” the fans began to cheer for the Heel Hogan instead of the Rock in a classic match for the ages.
III. Hogan vs Warrior Wrestlemania VI: This was the first main event featuring two fan favorites The Utlimate Warrior and Hulk Hogan and though Hogan fell short, his act of sportsmanship would make him soar into immortality in Sports-Entertainment.
IV. Andre leaves Wrestlemania VI with a tremendous ovation: Since Wrestlemania III Andre the Giant turned from one of the most beloved wrestlers to the most hated. Being one half of the Tag Team Champs with Haku as a member of the Colossal Connection it seemed the team was unbeatable going to Wrestlemania VI against Demolition. But Demolition defeated the Connection for the titles as manager Bobby Heenan began poking and insulting Andre for the lose. Ofcourse not realizing that angering a 7’4″ Giant is unwise Heenan and Haku were on the recieving end of the Giants wrath as Andre left Toronto as once again the beloved Giant in his last Wrestlemania match.
V. Wrestlemania VII The Ultimate Warrior VS Macho Man: In a Career ending Match: In a classic match, the classic moment came at the end of the match as the late Miss Elizabeth saved the Macho Man Randy Savage from the wrath of his former manager Sensatonal Sherri. Though the reunion didn’t last the moment on that night brought tears to the audience
VI. Wrestlemania X Shawn Micheals Vs Razor Ramon in a Ladder Match: The match for the Intercontinental Title turned HBK to Mr. Wrestlemania in and excting and innovative match.
VII. Wrestlemania 24 Ric Flair vs Shawn Micheals: Flair and Micheals give a classic match for the ages as the fans said goodbye to the 16 time Champ.
VIII. Wrestlemania X : Bret Hart Vs Owen Hart was a match between two brothers who grew up in the Hart legacy, the match which featured Owen pinning Bret in an upset win was one of the most exciting match of all time.
IX: Wrestlemania IX the WWE Title changes twice: After Bret Hart lost to Yokozuna thanks to Mr. Fuji and a dash of salt to the eyes; Hulk Hogan who was in a Tag Match with Brutus Beefcake came to the aid of Bret; however, Mr, Fuji challanged Hogan to face Yokozuna and beat him for the title, it was Hogan’s last Wrestlemania until 2002 as the WWE brought in a New Generation and some Attitude after.
X: Wresltemania 13 Bret Hart vs “Stone Cold” Steve Austin: When Austin refused to submit to Hart’s Sharpshooter it ushered in an Era of Attitude and a Hall of Fame Career.
