Spring is the perfect time to get off the couch and get moving on home improvement projects. But where do you start?
Organizing tools can be a home improvement project in itself. A variety of options are available for garage organization. Anything from plastic totes to utility shelving to a work bench will help get your tools in order. Lawn tool and sporting good organizers clear up the clutter. Hooks installed in the wall make a good home for ladders and other large equipment. Special overhead bins offer more storage space without losing floor space.
Improve Curb Appeal
A few simple landscaping projects can improve your home’s curb appeal. Many sites online offer tips and plans for landscaping. Depending on the size of the yard and the amount of current landscaping, this home improvement project can cost less than $100 or much more than that.
A simple way to improve the front of a home is to clean up the current landscaping. Trimming bushes, removing unappealing plants, and clearing away any clutter will improve the curb appeal.
Adding flowers will also improve the looks of a house. Measure and mark off the area for the flowers. Carefully select flowers and plants that work well in your climate. Simple garden borders can be purchased at any home improvement store. Once your border is installed and your flowers are planted, you can add mulch for a finished look. An easier way to add flowers it to purchase a few large, decorative pots and plant the flowers in them.
Refresh Exterior Trim, Shutters, and Doors
Chipping or weathered trim and shutters take away from the entire home. Carefully scrape chipping paint from your home’s exterior trim. Repaint the trim with an exterior paint and your windows are refreshed.
Shutters may also need to be repainted or replaced depending on their condition. If your home doesn’t currently have shutters, consider adding them. They come in a variety of colors and styles and you can generally get a pair of shutters in standard sizes for under $40. If you have large windows, custom order shutters will cost more.
Repainting or replacing exterior doors also gives your home a facelift. A new door can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand depending on the style and material selected.
Try replacing the drawer pulls on cabinets and drawers in the kitchen or bathroom. It is a simple project but can drastically change the look of the room. The cost of these pulls varies drastically, but you can find them as low as a few dollars each. Other items that can be easily changed are curtain rods and door knobs on interior doors.
Fresh Coat of Paint
A new coat of paint is one of the most cost effective ways to change the overall look of a room. A gallon of paint will vary depending on the brand but will typically run around $20 a can. Don’t forget to prep the walls with a good coat of primer, especially if the walls are already a dark color. Apply two or three coats of the new wall color depending on how well it covers. Repainting the ceiling will make the entire room look bright and new.
Taking advantage of the mild spring temperatures for your home improvement projects will give you a jump start on your list and allow you to sit back and enjoy the changes this summer.
