Who or what is God and, is there just one God? Where did He come from? All religions seem to have one-who’s right? How did man get tied up with God anyway?
These are just a few questions people ask. Some people are diligently seeking answers; some people are simply trying to find fault. If God is real He should stand up to scrutiny to either group.
There is one presupposition that must be agreed to prior to discussing the issue of God and that is that the Bible is the true and inerrant Word of God. The Christian believes that the Bible is God’s Word to him. That issue is another discussion so we must, for the time being, accept the Bible as fact.
If you have ever been in a room with a well-done portrait, you are familiar with the eyes following you all around the room. That illustrates God. In Exodus 3:14, God refers to himself as I AM. (1) That means whether you’re talking about eternity past, the present or eternity future, “God Is.”
As Genesis unfolds, we find that God is the Creator of all things. (2) So, we know God is all-powerful and He has and always will be.
God has a multitude of traits: Anger or wrath, love, wisdom, righteousness, consistency or “immutability,” and, Grace which we will return to momentarily, are just a partial list of His traits. (3)
Grace along with two other traits of God, holiness and love, serve as the initial ties between God and man.
As Genesis reports, as part of the entire creation of the universe, God created man. He did it to show His glory but also to show love. At the same time we know God is holy. He cannot tolerate sin (wrongdoing) because He is, literally the personification of holy (right) and to accept sin would mean violating Himself.
This set a pattern for our relationship with God.
God loves us. How do we know? He comes after us. Other gods are worshiped but are not alive. By revealing Himself to mankind God verifies His existence and shows His love.
He put Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. When they sinned they were ashamed and hid but God didn’t let them die in their sin. He was there for them as he is for us today.
God is a Triune God made up of three unique and definitive Gods: The Father (God), the Son (Jesus) and Holy Ghost (Indwelling Spirit); and yet They are One. It is a Mystery. How do we know this?
In Genesis 3:22 (4) God says man has become like one of “Us.” This signals the beginning of a “Bible long” illustration of God in His Special presentation.
Many people mistakenly think that God “kicked Adam and Eve out” of the Garden of Eden to punish them but a careful reading illustrates He did not want them to touch the Tree of Life and be trapped in their sin-he was already preparing Salvation. (5)
Our God is a jealous God. Mankind is important to Him. So important He sent His Son to pay our sin debt.
So who is God? God is the One True God. He has power and glory and He is holy. His ways are higher than our ways and that is why He must initiate giving us information and, he does.
