Once upon a time, Allen Iverson was one of the big movers and shakers of the NBA. Iverson would either make noise with his play, with his various off-the-court antics, or both at the same time. But nowadays, Allen Iverson’s biggest noise is from his haircut. After 12 years of playing with braids, Allen Iverson cut his trademark hair before his start in tonight’s All-Star Game.
Allen Iverson has always played with braids or cornrows in his hair for his entire NBA career. But as Iverson entered All-Star weekend, he was seen without them. Iverson cut them off, even though it was expected he would keep them throughout his career.
Reports are that Iverson sent the braids as a keepsake to his mother. In any case, it gave Iverson and his hair a piece of the All-Star spotlight, as he comes to All-Star weekend needing a boost.
Iverson was voted in as a starter for the All-Star game, but not under ideal circumstances. Iverson is starting for the East, though he started the season for the Western Conference’s Denver Nuggets.
The Detroit Pistons took Iverson, while he still had his trademark hair, in a blockbuster trade. The Pistons gave away their leader, Chauncey Billups, to get Iverson and get a scoring boost. But the trade hasn’t come off too well for Detroit so far.
The Pistons and Iverson are in the middle of the playoff race, far below Detroit’s usual performance. For the first time in six years, the Pistons are likely to be eliminated from the playoffs early. In contrast, Chauncey Billups has added a big spark to the Nuggets, as they lead their division and are fighting for the second seed in the playoffs.
If this turns out to be a failed experiment, Iverson, new hair or not, will be at a crossroads in his career. Iverson no longer inspires the headlines and buzz that he did with the Philadelphia 76’ers. Stars like Kobe, LeBron, Dwayne Wade and Dwight Howard have all the headlines now, while Iverson is fading back on the A-list.
Iverson can’t even spark up a huge off-court controversy anymore, as the hair cut is the best he’s come up with in a while.
As Iverson enters the second half of his career, his legacy is more vulnerable, as he has no championship rings and has never been able to create a formidable duo with a teammate.
The Pistons legacy is also under fire, as they have never been able to add to their one championship in their current era, and teams like the Celtics, Cavaliers and Magic have overtaken them.
Iverson will attempt to make a new start as he debuts his new hair style on the court in tonight’s All-Star Game.
