Attorney Gloria Allred has injected herself into the wildly controversial story of octo-mom Nadya Suleman. According to the Long Beach Press-Telegram, Allred and Angels in Waiting foundation founder Linda West-Conforti are offering to provide free housing, counseling and medical services to the Suleman family for at least six months. In order for the offer to stay on the table, Nadya Suleman must agree to it by next Thursday.
Prior to the Angels in Waiting offer, Gloria Allred tried to help the octuplets in another way. Gloria Allred feels, as do many, that it may not be in the best interest of the children to stay with Nadya Suleman and that she therefore ought to be investigated. To that end, Allred filed a complaint with the California Department of Children and Family Services. On the same day, however, Linda West-Conforti e-mailed Suleman with her offer. Now West-Conforti and Allred have apparently joined forces to force Suleman’s hand.
The Angels in Waiting offer is yet another plot twist in what has become one of the most talked-about stories of the year. When the story of the birth of the California octuplets first broke, the media understandably jumped on it, as it was only the second time that eight babies have ever been born at one time in the United States.
But then a number of troubling details emerged. In turned out that Nadya Suleman already had six other children before giving birth to the octuplets. And then it was learned that she had received IVF treatment for all of her children, including the octuplets (bringing her total number of kids to 14).
Fertility experts and medical ethicists were outraged that Nadya Suleman’s fertility doctor would agree to implant her with six embryos (one split in two). Multiple birth pregnancies carry tremendous risks, including the possibility of the children contracting neurological diseases and dying prematurely.
Fuel was added to the fire when it was learned that Nadya Suleman was single, unemployed, living with her parents and receiving over $400 a month in food stamps. She then set up a website inviting people to make donations and, for many, this was the straw that broke the camel’s back. If they had even a scintilla of doubt that Nadya Suleman was an egregiously irresponsible narcissist, it quickly evaporated with one view of her website.
And now Gloria Allred and Angels in Waiting have come into the picture. That Gloria Allred has injected herself into the Nadya Suleman octo-mom story will come as no surprise to many, for it seems that she has attached herself to every controversial story in modern history.
