As the nearly trillion-dollar Obama stimulus package winds its way through Congress, the DCCC has launched an online petition to express outrage at Rush Limbaugh for hoping that President Obama will fail.
The Rush Limbaugh petition reads:
“Jobs, health care, our place in the world — the stakes for our nation are high and every American needs President Obama to succeed. Stand strong against Rush Limbaugh’s Attacks — sign our petition, telling Rush what you think of his attacks on President Obama.”
The viewer is invited to give his or her name, email address, and a brief message to tell Rush what he or she thinks of him. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee promises to forward the missives of outrage to Rush Limbaugh personally.
One purpose for the Rush Limbaugh petition is to add numerous names and emails to the Democratic Party database so that they can be sent political spam. What makes the Rush Limbaugh petition remarkable, though, is that it targets a private citizen for the ire of the President of the United States and the Democratic Party.
The effect of the Rush Limbaugh petition, as with previous attacks on Rush Limbaugh by President Obama, has been to raise Rush Limbaugh’s profile and to empower him to be even more combative against President Obama and his economic stimulus bill. No doubt Rush Limbaugh supporters are signing the petition, using the comments section to express their support for Rush Limbaugh and their opposition to Barack Obama, the Democrats, and the stimulus package.
On his website, Rush Limbaugh responded to the petition by stating, “I am greatly puzzled. Why would the Democrats petition against me if I am doing such terrible damage to the GOP? ” Rush Limbaugh also started a “counter petition” by providing a link to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee general comments page to allow people to tell the DCCC what they think of their petition.
The Rush Limbaugh petition occurs at a time when more and more questions are being asked about the spending measures that have been tucked away in the economic stimulus package. Things like re-sodding the Washington Mall, new cars for the federal government, sexually transmitted disease prevention, and other pork-like goodies are apparently considered stimulus. One birth control measure, touted by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as cutting down on the number of children needing public assistance, was removed from the Obama stimulus bill.
House Republicans have revolted against the Obama stimulus package, no doubt inspired in part by Rush Limbaugh, and so it will narrowly pass with mainly Democratic votes. That means if (when) the Obama stimulus bill fails, it will be considered solely the fault of Barack Obama and the Democrats.
That last fact explains, no doubt, the rage Democrats feel toward Rush Limbaugh.
