I recently purchased an Archos 5 60GB IMT. This product is great, but has a major flaw to it. This major flaw to it is that the Internet capabilities are limited due to it’s weak processor, an ARM Cortex-A8. This works at 600 MHz which is good for how small the product is, but is nothing compared to laptop speeds. It also has some other minor flaws to it, but they are not important to how the product works, just to the display.
The design of the Archos 5 is very sexy if I may say so. It’s rather large, with a 4.8″ screen nothing to complain about here, other It weighs about 1 pound in your hand, which is very small considering all that it is capable of doing. It has 60 GB of storage space, more than enough for most people. You can fit about 80 full length movies on it, and about 20,000 MP3 files, not to mention it also can hold photos, about 80,000 of them. This has a lot of memory, and if you need more you can get the 120 GB , or 250 GB version. They have no difference to the 60 GB version other than they are thicker, and have a different backing to them.
The video quality is great on it. It automatically fits videos from Youtube, and other online video sources to fit the full screen of it. The resolution of the screen is 800 X 480 The only complaint I have about the video is that it doesn’t play with all flash compatible videos, about one out of every ten I find doesn’t work, this is better than most other products like this such as the Ipod Touch, Cowon, and other PVP’s/PMP’s/IMT’s. You must buy the plugins to be able to watch all types of videos such as h.264, avi, mpeg4, etc. You should buy both plugins for $40 so you can get the most out of your IMT.
The web browsing is very good compared to other portable web browsing devices. The only problem I can find with the internet capabilities are that the cache on the device iv very small. After visiting about fifteen websites some pages won’t load, and if they do they have what look like foreign charecters all over them. Another minor flaw that I’ve found with it’s internet capabilities is that it’s wireless range is somewhat small. Connecting to a network from about 30 feet away, and with two walls in the way is hard, and you must try it about four or five times. Once you get connected to the wireless network there are no problems as the network doesn’t fade away until you about 150 feet away from it.
The battery life of this product is alright. It can last for about six hours wathcing videos I’ve noticed, and about fifteen hours playing music. Web browsing significantly lowers battery power, and only lasts for a full charge for abotu four hours.
There is one complain I’d like to make in this post, not about the product, but about the makers of the product. They have so many things that you can do with this product, but to get all the benefits of this product you must buy more things such as the DVR station ($100), Battery docker ($50), Helmet Cam ($130), FM remote ($30), and there are a few other products that you can buy.
I’d recommend this product to any one who wants a high end product that’s like an Ipod Touch with more memory, capabilities, and it has it’s own hard drive. I personally would say that I was glad to get this product instead of an Ipod Touch. I have nothing against Ipod’s, but whe nI was looking for a new product, I wanted something that was different.
