Are Banks Open on President’s Day? The Majority are Closed. But what you really ought to be asking is….
Why is Washington’s Birthday the official name of the holiday that most people know as President’s Day? It stems from the fact that two of the nation’s most celebrated, beloved and important presidents – George Washington and Abraham Lincoln – were both born in February. George Washington was born on February 22, and Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12. And though George Washington’s birthday has been celebrated in the United States since before Abraham Lincoln was born, many states choose to honor both presidents simultaneously by combining the celebration of both their birthdays into one holiday called President’s Day (hence the popular perception that the holiday’s official moniker is President’s Day). The holiday falls on the third Monday of February.
According to Patriotism.org, Congress considered changing the official name of the holiday to President’s Day in 1968, but it was voted down. The website also notes that, in the 1980s, advertisers embraced the name President’s Day, and this served to further solidify the name in the nation’s collective consciousness.
