The Art Walk of Tacoma is something that many people should take advantage of. Every third Thursday of the month people are free to come and see the three museums of Tacoma. And they even can walk into the Federal Court House and look at the Chihuly glass art. The Art Museum offers the best free entrance as you can go the entire day. The rest of the art walk requires you to wait till 5 pm before you can enter for a free admission. What does this say about the city of Tacoma and its innate ability to use cultural tourism as a pertinent strategy? Does a city become more desirable if the ability to use things like a museum is there?
In the city of Tacoma there are many things and rumors that would keep people away. At least there used to be. With the city turning a new leaf people are starting to realize that Tacoma isn’t that bad. The artists and gallery owners instituted the Art Walk in 1989. They wanted to create more patronage to the art scene downtown (http://www.artwalktacoma.com/html/About.html). It seems that the Art Walk is something that the city benefits from but didn’t originally come up with the idea.
With the museums in a “cluster” it makes for an easier time for people to visit all the museums in one go. People are able to park or even take public transportation to the Art Museum, a good place to start since it is free all day, and then walk to the other museums. It is a capitol idea since it means that people are not getting in and out of their cars and leaves for more spontaneous shopping or even snacking along the way to the different museums. With the ability to walk from one place to another you are also promoting a healthier way of moving around even if that wasn’t the intent.
The different museums all participate in Art Walk as not only a form of tradition but a way to encourage people to indulge themselves in the arts when they normally wouldn’t. Many people assume that it is something the city does to get the public out and about the downtown area so that they can see what the city of Tacoma offers. Or for businesses near and far to see that Tacoma is cultured and is a good place to have their businesses. That we can attract every kind of person to visit the city of Tacoma. But that isn’t the history behind Art Walk. Consider that it was originally made for the artists. Not the business man. It is just that in this day and age most people don’t think of it that way anymore. They just see a ploy to get people in the downtown area. To show the world that we have class and culture. It wasn’t always that way. And maybe one day it will be realized once again.
Tacoma is a city of many joys and many heartaches. The Art Walk is merely away for those who tap into the artistic ability to show it off and show the world that Tacoma isn’t just a gang filled city.
