Whether you are buying supplies for your own family or rounding out a baby shower gift, generic baby supplies are a great way to economize. As a shopper and parent, I want high quality baby supplies that don’t put a huge dent in the budget.
It Cost How Much?
When I found out that my third child would be a boy, friends graciously offered to host another baby shower for me. At the shower we played a guessing game that was based on “The Price is Right.” It was rather shocking to find out how much basic baby supplies could cost nowadays. Two pacifiers cost $5.49? Twelve wipes in a travel pack for $1.49? I made it my mission to scour stores for the best possible deals after that. I only wish my friend had known where she could have bought equivalent same baby items for less. Now that she has a baby of her own, I will pass along my discoveries.
Here are four very affordable products for infants that I recommend:
1. Pacifiers – $3 for 3 at Walgreens
This is far and away the best deal out there for pacifiers. I have been on the lookout for cheap pacifiers for months, and these sturdy silicone versions are top quality without the name brand price. My son loves the jewel tone colors too.
2. Bath Wash – $1.22 at Target
The leading brand costs more than twice as much. Other stores offer generic baby bath at prices that are only slightly less than the more famous competitor.
3. Baby Bowls with Lids – $1 to $2 a set.
Generic bowls are not available at every store, but I have found them at a local grocery called Hy-Vee. A few years ago I bought some at dollar store, but they are not currently sold there. The name brand bowls usually cost at least $1 per bowl, which is obviously very profitable for the company. I’d rather keep the savings for myself.
4. Member’s Mark Baby Wipes at Sam’s Club.
Not only are they excellent for diaper duty, they can be pressed into service for quick cleaning around the house. I recently regretted purchasing another store brand, having forgotten the vast difference in quality and performance. Member’s Mark wipes are a cut above the rest, and I will not neglect to buy these next time!
The Rewards of Thinking Ahead
Laying out less cash for your baby now may allow you to put more money aside for something more valuable. After all, kids won’t even be aware of what brand of pacifier they used. But children will remember things like family vacations, summer camp, and attending college. So why not reduce your costs and save up for lasting investments?
