Baby showers are wonderful occasions to help parents welcome a new life into this world. Baby showers of course require you to bring a baby shower gift for the little one, something thoughtful and something useful the parents will need to raise the child. When picking a baby shower gift, you should always check the baby gift registry the parents create. Parents will list items they do not yet have, or items they’d like for the little one. These baby gifts can range in prices, but the price should not be the only concern for the buyer. Think of how long an item can be used by the parents or how helpful it can be.
Several baby gift items are always a good idea to bring to the baby shower, even if they are not on the list.
Here are several baby items that are useful to parents and are welcomed baby shower gifts;
The most obvious, as the baby will need diapers from the first day of birth. Diapers can sometimes be listed on the baby registry but some parents leave them off. They are however required for several years until the baby is fully potty trained. All parents with children know that one can never have enough diapers, so a bag or a box of baby diapers will always be a cheered gift at the shower.
However, try not to buy newborn or size 1 diapers. Babies do not stay in the small sizes for too long, and sizes such as 4 or 5 may take a while for baby to actually wear but will come in handy. Also, try to stay away from the cheap diapers. Reputable diapers such as Pampers or Huggies are always desired more.
No one wants to show up to a baby shower with a can of food, so this item can be purchased in a small can and tucked in a bag with other gifts. Trust me, as a parent, formula is always helpful! From my own experience not every new mother can breastfeed. Even with mom’s best desires and attempts problems may come up and breastfeeding will be impossible. Formula is a good substitution but it is expensive. Helping out parents with a can of formula is not something to be frowned upon, it is a sign of great gesture and thought for the family.
Everyone loves gift cards. Buying gift cards for large stores such as Target or Walmart is very helpful to the entire family. A new baby has many needs, and babies hit growth spurts which then require parents to buy clothes more often than they’d like to. A gift card to a superstore such as Target or Walmart is a great baby shower idea, the parents can buy whatever they’d need at the time. It can be used towards larger, more expensive items such as a high chair. A gift card for the baby shower can also be used towards baby food an formula. An overall great gift idea that gives the parents the convenience to buy exactly what the baby needs.
Despite babies needing clothes and needing clothes often once they hit growth spurts, I am personally against buying clothing for baby showers. Moms will often talk about getting useless items at their baby showers, items like clothing for newborns that he baby could not fit into. Sometimes it can be an issue of size or just personal preference. A clothing piece deemed ugly or cheap piece of clothing by the parents can actually offend them. Stay clear of clothes, and buy something else more useful such as a bottle sanitizer or a bottle drying rack.
I am all for gently used items. Gently used baby items can help out the family with larger, expensive items that the baby will need. They can also be thoughtful for the rest of the baby’s family such as grandparents. Ideally, the baby will be spending time at the grandparents’ house too so having an extra high chair or a play pen is a great idea. Buying these items brand new can get expensive though, so yard sales or hand me down stores for children’s items only are something to consider.
One thing about used items is that they should not be purchased without discussion with the parents. Approach the mom-to-be about purchasing used items, most will agree but some may be against the idea. If it is okay to buy hand me downs or gently used items, look for something that can be used for long term such as a high chair. Or ask the mom for specific items they are looking for that may be out of their budget at the time. Gently used baby items can cost up to 70% less than brand new.
