I spend a lot of my day reading blogs written by women. I subscribe to tons of them and also have links to the blogs I like on my own blogs. Reading blogs is a fun way to learn about people’s lives and new blogs come out all the time. 2008 was a great time for women’s blogs, and I do have my favorites, but there were definitely some that stood out as the Best Women’s Blogs of 2008. The criteria I used to choose the Best Women’s Blogs of 2008 were a) are they interesting b) do they have lots of photographs, c) can the writer spell and use correct grammar (blogs that are poorly written really turn me off), and d) are they written about places or things I don’t know very much about (i.e., I learn something from them). Taking all this into consideration, here is my list of the Best Women’s Blogs of 2008 – maybe yours is on there!
The Black Apple– The Black Apple is an absolute force of nature. She creates amazing amounts of artwork, prints, t shirts, buttons, dolls etc., she runs the most successful shop on Etsy.com, she appears on TV and in print magazines, and she also writes two blogs. Her blog “Inside A Black Apple” is all about her art, her life, the books she reads, the movies she watches, and the food she eats. She takes gorgeous photographs (with many on each blog post) and what she writes about is interesting. She is sometimes a little bit too sickly sweet for my taste (she calls her readers “my dears” a lot), but she’s definitely created a persona for herself and her blog is very successful. The Black Apple is actually my idol as far as a successful business woman goes. She knows exactly how to market herself for maximum success, and any budding business woman would do well to take a page from her book.
Her second blog is called “Some Girls Wander”, which features lovely photographs of The Black Apple (real name, Emily Martin) modeling all the clothing she buys. She has great taste and, what I love is, even though she’s slightly chunky she seems perfectly comfortable in her body. And that right there makes her incredibly sexy.
For these two blogs alone, The Black Apple gets my award (sorry, Emily, no prize!) as The Best Women’s Blog of 2008.
My Life in Spain – I love this blog. Written by an American woman, who left the US a few years ago to move to Spain, it’s a blog about life in a foreign country. The heading of her blog says, “tales of a 40 (yikes!)-year-old expat who left the big city and is now making her way in a mountain village in Spain, day-to-day observations, occasional rants about the frustrations of living in a foreign land, and traditional Spanish recipes”. I couldn’t have explained it better myself. She writes interesting blog posts and has the most beautiful photos of Spanish villages, Spanish food, her dog, her cat, her hubby, her house as well as recipes of simply delicious Spanish food. She also has a great sense of humor, so reading her work is fun. She also definitely deserves a place on The Best Women’s Blogs of 2008.
Chez Pim – An amazing blog for foodies. Written by a Thai woman who now lives in San Francisco, this is probably one of the most famous food blogs on the internet. Pim writes about food from all over the world, and features the most divine food photos you’ve ever seen. Her latest post is about Thai street food, specifically fried bananas, and it’s funny. (She also mentions the current political crisis and is spot on with her comments). If you love food, you will adore Chez Pim. And congratulation, Pim, for winning a place on my Best Women’s Blogs of 2008 list.
Tollipop – Tollipop is a blog written by an artist who paints the prettiest little girl artwork you’ve ever seen. She also has the loveliest family I’ve ever seen. Her girls are beautiful and she features them often on her blog, with the sweetest photos ever. Her family and her life have this kind of old-fashioned air to it, full of home-cooking, music lessons, family nights together and lots of laughter and fun. I recommend reading Tollipop – it’s really really lovely. Just for her family photos alone, she deserves a place on The Best Women’s Blogs of 2008.
ChatiryWorld– Katherine writes about her life in Edinburgh, Scotland (one of my favorite towns), and talks about pop culture, her boyfriend, Scottish politics, favorite TV shows and food. She writes in a chatty, friendly fashion and, because of this, gets some fun blog comments too. She also posts tons of fab photos. And she has a boyfriend who cooks! What’s also really interesting is she met her now-fiance by reading his blog on Typepad, then meeting him when she moved back up to Edingburgh. Katherine’s blog was a featured Typepad blog, and now she’s also on my list of The Best Women’s Blogs of 2008.
Generally Gemma – Gemma is a 20-something woman who lives in a little village just outside London. She grew up in Spain and says she “prefers to think of herself as European”. Gemma is a knitter, a papercrafter, and a reader but her photography is what I love. The photographs on her blog are simply stupendous (check out the latest one for Armistice Day – nothing but poppies pushed into a white shutter, but so beautiful). I hope Gemma continues blogging for years to come – and congratulations for making my The Best Women’s Blogs of 2008.
There are so many blogs written by women. Some funny, some sad, some touching, some scary – women are writing blogs all over the world.
