Bootylicious Beyonce Knowles released the video of her hit song “Diva” today. The track is off her latest album, “I am…Sasha Fierce.” You can see the video here.
Beyonce says the reason she created her sassy, tough-talking alter ego is to help calm her nerves when performing and when giving interviews and posing for photo shoots. According to the Post Chronicle, this is something she has done throughout her career. In fact her family and friends agree that when Beyonce performs on stage, she inhabits a totally different persona.
“She got on that stage and became a totally different person,” says Beyonce’s mom Tina Knowles about one of her daughter’s first performances at a school talent show. “My husband and I looked at each other like ‘Who is that?'”
Beyonce credits the diminutive pop star Prince with making her realize that she “trances out” and becomes “fierce” when she performs. She had this epiphany while performing with him at the 2004 Grammy Awards.
And now Beyonce has given that persona a name – Sasha Fierce. One viewing of the video will confirm that Sasha definitely is fierce. Sasha demonstrates in no uncertain terms that a “diva is a female version of a hustler.” But this raises an intriguing question: Do guys find a female version of a hot stud appealing? Well, this writer certainly doesn’t. Do you?
Sasha Fierce may sell a lot of albums and get a lot of buzz, but the real Beyonce is infinitely more appealing than Sasha Fierce. I got a sense of what the real Beyonce is like when I worked as a background actor on Dreamgirls. I was cast as a tuxedo-clad audience member at “The Dreams” reunion concert. If you didn’t see the film, this scene was one of many lavish production numbers in Dreamgirls. It was a blast to work on.
Beyonce looked resplendent in a beautiful, form-fitting gown (Much to my chagrin, however, she didn’t turn around nearly enough. Thus, I was denied an opportunity to properly admire and savor the booming system she carries in the back. But I digress. ). Anyway, my point is that I had a chance to observe Beyonce Knowles’ personality while working on this scene, and I can tell you that she carries an aura of supreme sweetness and sincerity. She’s nothing at all like Sasha Fierce. And that’s a good thing.
Who wants a female version of a hustler? Who wants a woman that’s fierce? The real Beyonce Knowles is so much more desirable; so much more interesting. She’s feminine, modest, kind, sweet….and has a booming system in the back.
