Some boys are prone to experimentation, full of curiosity about how things work. You know the ones I mean; not only do you suspect such boys might grow up to be engineers, you wonder how you will survive their curiosity until then. The best birthday party for such boys in the tween years may be one that allows them to invent their day away with friends.
The Rube Goldberg Contraption Building Birthday Party for Tween Boy Inventors
How do you plan a birthday party for a tween boy inventor? Don’t credit me with this first idea; I didn’t think of it, but rather observed it. When my boy inventor was about 11, he had tired of the commerical birthday parties. He’d already had an astronaut party, a bowling party, a laser tag party , a go kart party and a fossil hunt party. His friends had invited him to swimming parties, soccer parties, and even a medieval themed gargoyle workshop party. He wanted to have some boys over for a party at home, but the boys considered themselves too mature for typical children’s party games.
As my tween boy’s birthday approached, he could not decide exactly what he wanted to do at his birthday party. None of our suggestions impressed him. So, we ordered pizza and made birthday cake and let the boys wing it. What did they do to entertain themselves during my son’s birthday party?
For years, we have had a half-constructed tree house in our yard, The structure is sturdy so the boys can climb on it, but it has no walls or roof. The boys were climbing on the tree house and eating pizza at a table nearby when they apparently noticed some gardening supplies, and the inventors in them went to work. A length of drainage pipe, a few bricks, some 2 x 4s, rope, and some odds and ends from the recyling bin later, there was a Rube Goldberg contraption extending from the upper tier of the tree house to the ground below. The tween boys rolled balls through the Rube Goldberg contraption to test it. If a ball fell or got stuck, the birthday party inventors went back to work and tried another approach. When it worked as they intended, the inventors built additions onto the Rube Goldberg contraption. The building and refinement of that Rube Goldberg contraption kept the boy inventors busy throughout the birthday party until it was time to go home.
The Roller Coaster Building Birthday Party for Tween Boy Inventors
Roller coaster building is another activity enjoyed by tween boy inventors that makes a fun birthday party theme. Several manufacturers make roller coaster building kits that contain hundreds of parts, enough for several tween boy inventors to work together to build a roller coaster during a birthday party.
Computer software like the Roller Coaster Tycoon series is also fun for boy inventors to use at a roller coaster building birthday party. This software allows the boys to become amusement park owners and use business principles to build a cyber roller coaster. Inattention to physics and the coaster will crash. Inattention to budget and the coaster won’t get finished.
With a physical roller coaster building set and software for cyber building, boy inventors at a roller coaster building birthday party will have plenty of roller coaster building activities to keep their inventive minds occupied.
If you need a party idea for a tween boy inventor, a Rube Goldberg contraption or roller coaster building party might provide just the creative inspiration your tween boy inventor and his friends need.
