Bollywood is a term used for Bombay based Hindi film industry. It’s one of the largest film producers in the world. Unlike Hollywood, Bollywood does not have a physical presence. Bollywood is generally associated with Indian cinema but in fact it happens to be a small part of it as there is a very big cinema industry in southern India too. Bollywood films enjoy good mass support with millions of movie lovers thronging the cinema halls each day. Each year nearly 1000 movies are produced by Bollywood. Indian movies enjoy great following throughout the world thanks mainly to Indian diaspora settled worldwide.
Films produced by Bollywood are mostly musical and songs and dance sequences form an integral part of the script so much so that fate of certain movies are decided by quality of music. Films are generally dominated by themes such as love triangles, family ties, corrupt politicians, sacrifice, kidnappers and young lovers & angry parents. Bollywood film producers try to package wholesome entertainment in three hours of movie. One distinguishing feature of Bollywood is its dominance by few families. Majority of lead stars come from families with background in films while for majority of aspiring actors making it big in Bollywood remains just a pipedream.
The success of Bollywood movies generally depend on lead stars who in most cases account for nearly 50% of the total budget of whole movie. The appeal of leading actors and pre release hype around a movie is what differentiates between success and failure. Leading actors are busy throughout the year and are involved in number of movies. At times top actors are so busy that they shoot for 3-4 films in a single day!
Until recently Bollywood movies relied on often repeated scripts but now there is an emphasis on off the beat films also. Bollywood film makers are finding their feet and getting international acclaim for films they make. Now films are being shown in American and British theaters quite frequently. Indians are spread worldwide and ensure success of movies.
However Bollywood has a long way to go to catch up with more advanced Hollywood. Film funding is a perennial thorn in the flesh of movie makers and in the absence of funding by organized sector they have to rely on financing by underworld. Banks are loath to finance Bollywood films on account of inherent risks involved. There is also a well entrenched piracy market that swallows rightful share of movie makers and pushes them to brink of financial disaster. Increasing popularity of Hollywood films is also giving sleepless nights to the producers in Bollywood. The young generation which constitutes the major chunk of market is getting increasingly attracted towards movies produced by Hollywood.
Bollywood is taking baby steps to match the might of technically and financially superior Hollywood. The well known producers are experimenting with different types of themes and are also finding support of audiences. Bollywood movies are also being recognized at various international film festivals. Film industry is pressing hard for getting the funding through proper channels.
