I am exploring relationships between medications, In this article Bontril PDM (Phendimetrazine) is looked at in relationship to dry mouth also known as cotton mouth also known in the field of medicine as Xerostomia.
Interestingly before I went to write this article I found the following which came to me via e-mail. It is an article called TorreyPines Therapeutics Muscarinic Agonist NGX267 Meets Primary Endpoint in a Phase II Clinical Trial in Patients with Xerostomia. In a nutshell there were positive results from a trial of 26 patients. These patients used 3 doses on NGX267 as a treatment for xerostomia or dry mouth. The article defines Xerostomia as “dry mouth the result of decreased salivary flow… a symptom of a number of underlying conditions. Causes of dry mouth include radiation treatment to the head and neck; and HIV-related salivary gland disease and aging.
Cotton Mouth is a colloquial term for dry mouth. Xerostomia is sometimes colloquially called pasties. Dry mouth/cotton mouth or the more medical term xerostomia is a symptom resulting in a condition. In and of itself it is not a disease.
Bontril PDM is a brand name. The generic name for this drug similar to amphetamine is Phendimetrazine. Other brand names include Adipost, Phendiet, and Statobex. This drug stimulates the central nervous system which affects your nerves and brain. It increases you heart rate and blood pressure thus it makes a very good (or bad) ingredient in diet pills. Phendimetrazine according to drugs.com “Phendimetrazine is used as a short-term supplement to diet and exercise in the treatment of obesity.”
Does Bontril PDM cause dry or cotton mouth?
I’m not a doctor but it seems to me that of all the over the counter drugs (easily bought on the Internet) I’ve looked at so far Phendimetrazine is the most dangerous. The least of the problems is dry mouth but it does in fact according to drugs.com cause xerostomia.
The Weight Loss Institute which does not recommend Phendimetrzine because of the side effects notes that “Bontril has caused different side effects like restlessness, anxiety, dizziness, headache, insomnia, diarrhea, and dry mouth.
A site that sells Bontril PDM states side effects:” Blurred vision, dizziness, dry mouth….”
MedTV discusses “that Bontril has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials.” It goes on to explain how the studies were conducted. As in all scientific studies one group received Bontril and another received a placebo. In these studies there were many side effects including dry mouth.
