Is there really any thought more comforting than that of having access to a steak sandwich or a (at least) half-way decent pizza 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? And that they will deliver (in the downtown area) any order of $10 or more (with a service charge of $2.50)? Well… perhaps you don’t feel so hot about that service charge, but, believe me, you wouldn’t want to drop into this part of downtown San Diego in the wee hours of the night to pick up your very late dinner/early breakfast… unless you really think that a steak sandwich is worth getting mugged over.
Broadway Pizza is on Broadway just east of 11th St in the Core neighborhood of downtown. It’s just a short walk from the City College trolley station… Not very close to any other local attractions, though. The area is heavily populated with homeless migrants even during the day. And while most of them are harmless (you’re probably more perilous than most of them are, as Gandalf the Grey would reckon), the area is definitely dodgy especially at night.
The food here is Italian-American. They serve typical breakfast food (the $5.49 ‘Working Man’s Special’, while doesn’t taste more special than the 2 eggs and an overcooked sausage link typically do, is definitely edible), hot sandwiches and burgers (do not order the fish sandwich under any circumstances! It’s downright disgusting!) for $8 or less, pretty good selections of salad, real entrees (from so-so fried chicken dinner for $11 to the so-so whole slab of beef ribs for $20), and, of course, pizza.
To be honest, if you want a good pizza for a good price, you’d be better off going to Papa John’s across Broadway… unless you want it between 1-10AM (then Broadway Pizza is just about the only game in town. Lucky you!). They do sort-of-thin crust pizza at this joint, but quite miss much of the qualities that make thin crust pie so endearing. It is neither airy nor its bottom crispy… and is even limp at times (which, of course, makes for a messy eating session). They do give you a lot of topping, but they’re mostly second-degree fresh…
There’s a good dinning facility (though not all that well cleaned most of the time) and working restrooms (that I’d use only as a last resource). Service is fine during the day, but tends to lag during the night and early morning. If this joint is located elsewhere, it’d probably be out of business… Its proximity to City College and its trolley station (and the fact that it is opens at all hours of the day) is, I think, its main assets.
