The Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Restaurant and market was our lunch spot during our stay in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. We were hoping for something out of the ordinary. This restaurant certainly fits the criteria.
No reservations are taken at Bubba Gump. Neither do they offer call ahead seating. Given the large crowd that was gathered outside we were concerned about the wait. Fortunatley (for us) these were large groups. Our party of 3 was seated in The Gump House immediately.
The Gump House is a neat little room within Bubba Gump Seafood. You feel as though you are eating in Bubba’s kitchen. The walls were white with purple flowers. Photos adorned the walls. There was a separate music control that is just for the room. The room itself was much quieter than the general restaurant. You cannot reserve the room but they said you are welcome to request it and you may wait if it is full. It seats 9 and would be perfect for a small lunch or dinner meeting.
Meghan was our server. She did a great job, was knowledgeable about the meals and answered our questions. Our tea glasses stayed full. She checked back frequently and was a credit to Bubba Gump Seafood Co. Bubba Gump got a 93 on their last health department inspection. The other employees must work as hard as she does.
On this visit, my husband and I decided to share a meal. We ordered the “Bucket of Boat Trash” and an extra side of french fries. The prices are a little steep. Our “Bucket” cost $18.99. It came with 4 small pieces of fried slipper lobster, 4 fried shrimp and 4 pieces of fried mahi-mahi. Also included were fries and a small order of cole slaw.
Although we liked it, I’m not sure the meal price was worth it in terms of the quantity of food you receive. Our total cost for the two of us for the “Bucket”, 2 drinks and a basket of 2 large pieces of garlic toast was $33.27 – plus the well deserved tip. It was a little pricey for a business lunch. You can peruse the menu online. Prices are not listed.
Part of what you pay for at Bubba Gump is ambience. For those who don’t know, the restaurant is based on the movie Forrest Gump. You’ll also find signs to signal the server with. If everything is fine leave the license plate style signs set on “Run Forrest Run”. Need something? Flip to the red sign that says “Stop Forrest Stop”. The decor includes photos and memorabilia from the movie. The effect is eclectic and fun.
It is a unique restaurant. Dress is casual. On each table is a bucket that contains a roll of brown paper towels, ketchup and vinegar. Written on the table are sayings from the movie. The “life is like a box of chocolates…” and “One day, I decided to go for a little run…” are some of what you will see.
Outside, the Shrimp character was posing for pictures. Peppy music filled the air from the restaurant.
When you finish eating be sure to check the gift shop. This is where you’ll find all things Forrest. They have T-shirts, hats, drinkware, pins and more. It can be a good place to find an unusual gift. Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Online Store
The restaurant has the advantage of being within walking distance of the convention center. The service was good and the ambience fun. I’ll probably go back to Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. in Gatlinburg next year. I’ll just be sure to cash in the savings bonds first.
