Are you struggling with the challenges of losing weight? While you may be tempted to look for quick fixes such as diet pills or starvation diets, the best solution for permanent weight control is simple. Take in fewer calories than you burn off each day. If you find yourself engaging in mindless eating throughout the day, you may want to consider a quick and inexpensive appetite suppressant, flavored chewing gum. There’s some thought that the simple act of chewing on flavored chewing gum can help with weight control. Can chewing gum really help you lose those excess pounds?
A study presented in 2007 to the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Obesity Society showed that chewing gum can suppress appetite and result in intake of fewer overall calories. Study subjects were asked to eat an afternoon snack. Half of the subjects were given a stick of gum to chew before their snack, while the other half didn’t have gum before snacking. It was found that those subjects who chewed gum before their snack consumed fewer calories than did non gum chewing subjects. The gum chewers also reported a greater reduction in appetite. If the results of this study hold true, flavored chewing gum could provide a simple, inexpensive and satisfying way to suppress appetite and reduce overall calorie intake. Chewing gum is readily available and is unlikely to result in the side effects seen with some types of appetite suppressants.
While it would seem that sugar-free flavored chewing gum would be the best choice due to the lower calorie and sugar content, sugar-free gums contain a sweetener known as sorbitol. Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol that’s not easiliy absorbed by the intestine. Because of its poor absorption, it behaves like a laxative and can cause significant abdominal discomfort, bloating, and diarrhea, sometimes resulting in a dangerous degree of weight loss. If you develop diarrhea or abdominal discomfort from sugar-free chewing gum, cut back on the amount you’re chewing or discontinue it entirely. The body’s response to the sorbitol in sugar-free gums can vary widely from person to person.
Try chewing on a piece of sugar-free flavored chewing gum before meals to help you reduce the amount you eat when you finally sit down to the table. Keep a pack of flavored chewing gum handy as a mid-morning or afternoon snack to keep you away from the doughnut box at work. Although peppermint chewing gum is a good choice because of its lively, minty flavor, try varying the flavors to continuously challenge and satisfy your taste buds. Spend a little more time chewing your favorite flavored chewing gum and you may find yourself spending less time at the dinner table and soon discover that your jeans are a little looser.
