For people who get them, canker sores can be a painful experience. If you don’t get them and don’t know what they are, a canker sore (or mouth ulcer) is a small, red spot that appears inside your mouth. Some people get one at once, some people get a whole lot of them, but either way they hurt. Canker sores, if left alone, can also take up to two weeks to heal. So, are there any natural ways you can treat canker sores, and if so, what? The answer? Wet tea bags.
Over the last few years, tea seems to have become the catch-all treatment or cure for a whole myriad of diseases and health problems. Therefore, it’s actually not surprising that wet tea bags can also be used to treat canker sores. The reason is that black tea contains something called tannin. Tannin stops the pain by acting like a mild pain killer. Making a cup of black tea, and then putting the wet tea bag on the canker sore can solve your pain problem. The taste isn’t very nice, but the canker sore pain will go away.
But is it just black tea that treats canker sores, or does green tea work as well? Yes, in fact, it does. Green tea contains tannin as well as many antioxidants that can also help with the treatment of canker sores. Green tea also tastes a little pleasanter than black tea, for me, so I would use a green tea bag on a canker sore.
Using a wet tea bag on a canker sore is not only a treatment that actually works, but it’s also a fast treatment. Many people report the canker sore has disappeared or is rapidly healing within only 24 hours of applying the wet tea bag. Wet tea bags are also easy to use on canker sores.
So, the next time you get a canker sore, follow this simple remedy and the pain (and probably the canker sore) will be gone in no time. Put a green or black tea bag in a cup and pour boiling water over it. Steep it (i.e., let it sit) for 1-2 minutes until all the flavor of the tea has been released. Then, take the tea bag out of the cup; drain the liquid from it by pressing it against the back of a spoon, and put into your mouth pushing it gently up against the canker sore. It’s a pretty uncomfortable treatment because the taste of the tea bag is quite bitter. But if you can stop yourself from tasting the tea too much and manage to get through 20 minutes before you remove the tea bag, the day after you’ll be happy you did. The sore will be healing or gone, and you’ll be in a lot less pain.
Wet tea bags can also be used to treat cold sores on the outside of your mouth, so if you’re unfortunate enough to get a canker sore and a cold sore at the same time, apply one wet tea bag outside your mouth and one wet tea bag inside your mouth and you’re guaranteed success.
