Ever since the writers’ strike, many people I knew were nearly devastated. They feared that their favorite shows would suddenly become terrible and full of lame ideas or even be pulled. To them, it was the end of the world.
To me, I was a little upset, but at least felt sorrow for the writers – it isn’t easy out there to make it as a writer. And of course, I was still happy with many reruns to old shows that I like to watch. Although, I will at least admit it – I do like a few of the new shows that are out there. “Two and a Half Men” is one of the decent, funny shows that I like to watch.
Of course, when the writers’ strike suddenly hit, other writers decided to step in. And of course, we were fully introduced to the world of reality shows and way too many game shows. And some other new dramas that came out, well, let’s just say they didn’t make it past the first season or for some, not even past the pilot.
I tried watching a few of the new shows out there, but a lot of the names just didn’t catch on. (I tried watching Paris Hilton’s “My New BFF,” but couldn’t make it through one show. Too many people on the show are so fake when they pretend to want to be a famous person’s friend). And one show that is coming out that I don’t think will last long is “Secret Millionaire” – if you’re on the show, then you have to know about the money! Now it’s no longer a secret! Some shows are just like other shows: think about it – “Gossip Girl” is just like another soap opera or drama show about rich girls chasing guys or something like that.
And not only have there been new shows, but many older shows have had somewhat drastic makeovers. For example, can you believe how many different ways you can solve a puzzle on “Wheel of Fortune” or how much stuff is being given away? (I wonder if any of the contestants actually got their prizes because of the taxes they had to pay to claim them.)
After listening to new possibilities of new shows that may come to TV (one was “Would You Like to Marry Me for a Green card?” or something like that), I decided to list canceled shows for five very popular television channels: FOX, ABC, NBC, CW, and CBS. And believe me, some of these shows you will be glad that they canceled them.
“Aliens in America”, “Beauty and the Geek”, “Crowned”, “CW Now”, “Girlfriends”, “Life is Wild”, “Online Nation”, “Pussycat Dolls Present”
Now, for me, I actually liked “Girlfriends” and “Aliens in America” – they were actually kind of funny. I do have to agree that “Pussycat Dolls Present” and “Crowned” needed to be pulled. “Crowned” was just another copycat of many beauty queen shows already out there. I felt bad though for “Life is Wild” – it only lasted from October 2007 to February 2008.
“Cane”, “Jericho”, “Kid Nation”, “Moonlight”, “Power of 10”, “Secret Talents of the Stars”, “Shark”, “Viva Laughlin”, “Welcome to the Captain”
I have never even heard of “Viva Laughlin”. “Power of 10” wasn’t bad for a game show, but, it just wasn’t interesting enough to catch on. Also, it wasn’t easy to win a lot of money on the show (narrowing percentages is not easy to do). And “Welcome to the Captain” – maybe it would have lasted if the name was at least interesting!
“Back to You”, “Canterbury’s Law”, “Nashville”, “New Amsterdam”, “The Next Great American Band”, “Unhitched”, “The Return of Jezebel James”
Is it just me or does FOX have some sort of music theme going for a lot of their recent television shows? And to those interested, yes, “American Idol” has been renewed for another season. I wonder what Simon will say next…
“Oprah’s Big Give”, “October Road”, “Big Shots”, “Carpoolers”, “Cashmere Mafia”, “Cavemen”, “Just for Laughs”, “Men in Trees”, “Miss/Guided”, “Notes from the Underbelly”, “Women’s Murder Club”
First of all, if real cavemen descendants of ours couldn’t survive very long, then a TV show about them can’t either. Unfortunately for “Cashmere Mafia”, despite its good cast, it was too much like “Sex and the City”. And as for “Oprah’s Big Give,” maybe her talk show was already enough for us to watch about her.
“Las Vegas”, “Phenomenon”, “1 vs. 100”, “Amne$ia”, “Bionic Woman”, “Clash of the Choirs”, “Journeyman”, “My Dad is Better than Your Dad”, “Quarterlife”, “The Singing Bee”
Well, at least the good news is we still have plenty of singing shows and game shows out there. I wonder if “My Dad is Better than Your Dad” was any good.
At least some new shows that are out there are really good, and I give thumbs-up to those writers. If anyone would like to take a stab at being a TV show writer, go for it. I know you can come up with some better ideas than many of the shows that have recently been canceled.
