Michael Phelps squeaky-clean reputation has taken a bit of a beating lately with pictures of the swimming superstar gambling, visiting a strip club, and smoking weed making parents wish they’d never told their children that they could grow up to be just like him someday. It is, perhaps, the tarnishing of Michael Phelp’s inspirational story that has made him such an object of disgust to so many Americans lately, but he’s just one of many celebrities who have been caught enjoying using illegal substances on camera.
The Governor of California is a prime example of a man caught smoking pot on camera who would later rise to greatness. If being Mr. Universe weren’t enough to secure Arnold Schwarzenegger a place in history as one of greatest men in America, he would later become our favorite catch-phrase generating machine; marry into the Kennedy family; and then go on to become the only Republican in America who could control those rabble-rousers in California. Michael Phelps has already completed steps one and two with a feat of extreme athleticism and a picture that has ruined his reputation. Next stop, Hollywood!
And in Hollywood, Michael Phelps would certainly find plenty of sympathizers to share a joint with. Beautiful Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron has been caught smoking weed on the beach using a Granny Smith apple pipe, and Paris Hilton was photographed tokin’ up while talking on the phone. Her BFF Nicole Richie also got caught on camera sharing a pipe with a friend. ‘Twilight’ star Kristen Stewart may be a newly dubbed teen queen, but that hasn’t stopped her from smoking weed on her doorstep. So at least Michael Phelps has something in common with these lovely ladies.
And then there are celebrities like Tupac, Snoop Dogg, and David Crosby, who have all posed for pictures with pot, proudly letting the world that they smoke what they want when they want. They are even celebrated for their use of this beloved illegal substance.
But weed isn’t the worst drug out there that celebrities are enjoying on film. Kate Moss was caught on camera snorting a line of coke, and Amy Winehouse has been videotaped smoking crack, so Michael could be doing a lot worse.
All of these people on this list have one major thing in common: they are all still celebrities who continued to make a whole lot of money and have a whole lot of fans, even after it was revealed to the world that they use drugs. So America will eventually forgive Phelps, even though his name has become a rallying cry for those who want marijuana legalized. After all, if it were legal, it would have been no worse than the 23-year-old being photographed sipping a beer, and America’s hero would still be just that.
