Add a lovely touch to your living space with this adorable chalkboard heart serving tray. This creation is perfect for a festive Valentine’s Day touch or even just as an accent piece all year long.
For this project, you will need:
– One unfinished wood serving tray (available at craft supply stores)
– Medium grit sandpaper
– Tack cloth or other soft cloth
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Cherry Red
– Krylon Chalkboard Paint in Black
– Krylon Leafing Pen in Red Shimmer
– Three inch or larger heart shaped stencil
– Craft knife
– Self healing mat
– Masking tape
– Small piece of chalk
– Red plastic jewels (available at craft supply stores)
– Hot glue gun and glue sticks
– Newspaper or large drop cloth
For best results, cover your work area with a few sheets of old newspaper or a large plastic or fabric drop cloth. Gently sand the unfinished wood serving tray with medium grit sandpaper. Wipe away any dust accumulated on the wood surface with a tack cloth or other soft cloth.
Spray the entire outside of the tray with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. (This may take several different positions to coat the entire wood tray.) Allow the tray to dry for four to five hours. Paint the entire outside of the tray using Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Cherry Red. Dry for an hour before adding a second coat of paint. Let the tray dry for several hours.
Place a piece of cardstock onto a self healing mat. Trace the three inch or larger heart shaped design in pencil onto the paper. Cut out the heart shape with a craft knife. Discard the heart shape and keep the remaining cardstock template. Adhere the template to the center of the tray with masking tape. Cover any other exposed areas, beside the heart shape, with masking tape for protection.
Paint the exposed heart shape with a layer of Krylon Chalkboard Paint in Black. Dry for an hour before adding a second coat of paint. Repeat this process for ten coats of paint. Dry for one to two days. Use the side of a piece of chalk to coat the entire heart shape. Wipe away with a tack cloth. Remove all masking tape and cardstock.
Outline the heart shape with a Krylon Leafing Pen in Red Shimmer. Dry for several hours. Heat up a hot glue gun. Adhere a few red plastic jewels onto the tray. Cool completely before using the tray.
