Chandra Levy wound up bringing down Gary Condit’s political career from beyond the grave, after her disappearance in 2001. Condit’s affair with Levy before her death, and the constant suspicions that he actually killed Levy, cost Condit his job as a California Congressman. The Chandra Levy-Gary Condit scandal was the biggest news story of the summer of 2001, before other things knocked it off the front page. But Chandra Levy is back in the headlines, after D.C. police teased that her real killer might have finally been found.
After years of jokes and suspicion about Gary Condit’s involvement, police are reportedly about to apply for an arrest warrant for a new suspect. Ingmar Guandique, who is already is jail for assault, is alleged to be the newest suspect in the Levy murder case.
Reports have it that Guandique is locked up for killing two women in Rock Creek Park, where the remains of Chandra Levy were found one year after she disappeared. Additional reports accuse a fellow inmate of telling investigators that Guandique told him he killed Levy.
D.C. police are filing their evidence on Guandique to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. If it pans out, a warrant against Guandique could come at the beginning of next week.
The connection between Guandique and Levy is unknown, but the connection between Levy and Gary Condit was much more scandalous when the story broke out. Levy was an intern for the Bureau of Prisons, with Condit as a Congressman. When Levy disappeared on May 1, 2001, it soon came out that Condit and Levy had an affair.
Condit underwent many accusations that he killed Levy or made her disappear, but he was never an official police suspect. After 9/11, Condit and Levy disappeared from national headlines, until Levy’s remains were found in 2002. The damage was done to Condit, who lost his re-election bid later that year.
By then, many found it easier to believe Condit had something to do with Levy’s death. The possible arrest of Guandique may help end that suspicion, but it still might not lead to anything.
When JonBenet Ramsey was killed over 10 years ago, many leaped to the conclusion that her parents committed the murder, just as people leaped to believe Condit killed Levy. The Ramsey case also appeared to be solved years after the fact, when Jon Mark Karr was arrested after confessing to the crime.
However, Karr was a liar and suspicion against him was dropped. Guandique may or may not be no less reliable if he is charged with Levy’s death.
Even if this is the real deal, Chandra Levy and Gary Condit will always be tied together in life and death, no matter if a third party actually killed her.
