What you will need:
Photos of the family– as many as you can get…ask relatives for them and you should be able come up with a pretty good amount of pictures to base the collage on
2 Large poster boards at least the size of the picture frame that you choose to display the pictures on.
Glue that is Acid Free and Safe for Photos
Silver or Gold Paint Marker
What to do:
Making a Cheap and Easy Christmas Gift for Grandparents: Step #1: First decide which pictures you would like to include in the collage. You can include pictures from the entire family or you may wish to pick a theme to the collage such as just the grandchildren, or just your immediate family, or even just pictures of you and your grandparents over the years. No matter what theme you choose, make sure that you pick pictures of all sizes for the most contrast. If you do not have different size pictures you can change the picture sizes with a home scanner and printer or at a kiosk such as the Kodak Picture Maker which is found in common stores such as Walgreens and Walmart.
Making a Cheap and Easy Christmas Gift for Grandparents: Step #2: Determine the layout of the collage. The layout should include white space in between the pictures but not a vast amount. 1-2 inches at the most should be left in between different pictures. The layout does not have to be in a squared manner but the pictures should be evenly spaced on the mat. Layout pictures on a poster board that has been sized to fit the frame that you wish to use.
Making a Cheap and Easy Christmas Gift for Grandparents: Step #3: Trace the surround of the pictures onto the poster board. This will become the mat for your pictures.
Making a Cheap and Easy Christmas Gift for Grandparents: Step #4: Measure inside of the tracing about 1/8 of an inch to be cut out. Cut the tracing out with a sharp razor knife. This poster board will then be used to trace the layout of your photos onto the other poster board. Lay the cut poster on top of the other poster and trace the openings.
Making a Cheap and Easy Christmas Gift for Grandparents: Step #5: Glue pictures in the traced spots on the second poster board. Make sure that the pictures are glued on completely and allow the glue to dry.
Making a Cheap and Easy Christmas Gift for Grandparents: Step #6: The cut piece of cardboard will still have tracing marks from the original edge of the pictures. With a silver or gold paint marker, trace over the existing lines. This will create a boarder for each of your pictures.
Making a Cheap and Easy Christmas Gift for Grandparents: Step #7: Once glue has dried and paint marker has dried completely, you may layer the two poster boards together. Place the cut poster board on top of the board that has the pictures glued to it. Make sure that the pictures show through the holes that were cut on the other poster. Once you have lined the two up you may place them in the photo frame.
