I have been going to Big Nick’s Pizza Joint in New York City’s Upper West Side forever! So when it was recently brought to my attention that I have written about so many other lesser places before Big Nick’s, well that’s just a travesty. New York City dining is an art and Big Nick’s Pizza Joint is not for everyone; it’s not even for my wife! But my old buddy Don and I have been going there for years and years. New York City is a colorful landscape and what repulses some is right where I fit in with this old relic. While Big Nick’s Pizza Joint isn’t going to win any awards that I’m aware of, it does have its own winning charm.
Big Nick’s Pizza Joint isn’t really a pizza joint, per se. Big Nick’s is more of a one stop dining spot. You’d know it right from the moment you walk in the door; even before the hostess hands you this phone book of a menu. Along the wall at Big Nick’s Pizza Joint is every manner of photograph, relic, drawing, scrap paper, used tissue, and more from New York City that you could imagine. Big Nick’s isn’t going to win any Martha Stewart/Good Housekeeping awards anytime soon. That’s no bother for the folks who work here and the regulars who make this Upper West Side spot their secret vice. Big Nick’s has been around, serving New York City and the Upper West Side since 1962; the fact that they are open 24 hours a day gives Big Nick’s a decided advantage as New York City is the City that Never Sleeps; Big Nick’s Pizza Joint is the joint that keeps on smoking.
Big Nick’s does have a few caveats; they accept cash only. They have a great delivery staff though who will rush your stuff right to wherever you are on the West Side. Big Nick’s Pizza Joint is actually well known for their burgers. They have a whole menu for New York City which includes pizza, sandwiches, breakfast, sweets, shakes, juice drinks, and basically anything else you could ever think to get at an American Diner.
What separates Big Nick’s Pizza Joint from the others is simple; they’ve been here longer. their space is a little hole in the wall, the seats are cramped, the service can be brisk or way too familiar, but when you ask for what you want, the way you want it, by Golly if Big Nick’s kitchen doesn’t do the job! So the next time you’re trolling around the Upper West Side of New York City; looking for something to do with a hankering for something to eat; give my brother’s at Big Nick’s Pizza Joint a shot! Who knows? If you happen by and you find me and my friend Don chatting it up about this or that, say hi!
