My kids and I have a pass to the Phoenix Zoo. They would enjoy going every day, because it is such a child-friendly attraction. There is a lot more for children to do at the zoo than just seeing animals. Here are some of my kids’ favorite things to do at the zoo.
My little guys love to spend time at the Harmony Farm. There are several goats that kids have the opportunity to pet. Brushes are available for children to pick up and brush the goats. There are also sheep and horses. Kids can climb on the life-sized tractors, and there is a swing to play on. A recent addition to the Harmony Farm is the Little People Discovery Farm. The Discovery Farm has toddler-sized little people animals that children can climb on, a toddler-sized tractor, and a scaled down barn for the littlest animal lovers.
Phoenix gets hot in the summer, but that doesn’t mean that kids won’t enjoy the zoo. The best thing about the Phoenix Zoo in the summer is the Leapin’ Lagoon. The Leapin’ Lagoon is a play area for the kids where they can run through fountains running in all different directions. My kids can have fun spending an hour or more here when the weather is hot. The Leapin’ Lagoon is turned off during the winter.
The Yakulla Caverns are another place where kids can cool off during the summer, but it is a lot of fun during the winter too. The Yakulla Caverns resemble going into a cave, with stalactites and stalagmites. There is also a slide to go down. During the summer, there are water jets that turn on, but they are turned off during the winter. The Yakulla Caverns opened at the Phoenix Zoo in September 2008, and when we had the chance to visit, there were quite a lot of kids having fun there.
Virginia G. Piper Enchanted Forest
In the Enchanted Forest, there is a large play house that the kids can enjoy. There is a log tunnel for children to crawl through, and a river that flows during the summer. My kids love to play in the Enchanted Forest, but during spring break, it can get pretty crowded. When the zoo is really crowded, I’m a little nervous about losing my toddler with all the kids around. During days when there are fewer children, I like to take the kids here.
Other Fun Things
My kids usually like to ride the carousel whenever they go to the zoo. For $10, we can buy a pass for seven rides (the rides are normally $2 each). Stingray Bay is another fun activity, where you can pet and even feed stingrays, that is open in the fall, winter, and early spring. There are also pedal boats and camel rides.
The Phoenix Zoo has other programs that would be fun for kids, although I’ve never had the opportunity to go, because they cost extra money. There are nature programs for toddlers, special breakfasts for preschoolers, and even a night camp.
Whether you come to the Phoenix Zoo to watch the animals or to play, it is a lot of fun for children of all ages. The outstanding variety of things to do is why we get a season’s pass every year.
