Choosing a paint and a paint color for your bedroom can be exhausting work. What type of paint should you buy? Your choices include flat, satin, semi-gloss, and gloss. What are the differences and how do they affect the color of the paint? What color are you going to paint your bedroom? When you ask this question one needs to know what the bedroom is used for.
If the primary use of your bedroom is to sleep, whether day or night, you may want a dark color or a color that doesn’t reflect much light. If you have ever tried to sleep during the day you know that light colors or gloss or satin paint can reflect light in the room making it brighter.
If you sleep during the day, you may want to paint your room a deep dark color either in flat paint or semi gloss paint. The best deep dark colors are cream or off white if you are thinking a traditional color, or a dark blue, dark purple, dark green. Black is not a reflective color either but you might want a little brightness to your room.
If your bedroom is a place that you live during the day and sleep at night, you may want a brighter color to reflect activity and warmth. Gloss and satin paints may not be paint you want for an adult bedroom unless you don’t mind shiny walls. Pastels are soft, warm colors that are good for bedrooms with activity in them. Colors for active bedrooms can be mint, lavender, light pinks or baby blue. Stay away from bright colors like yellow and orange. It doesn’t matter what time of day or night it is, these colors tend to wake you up and energize you.
Gloss paint is really good for living areas and children’s rooms because you can easily wipe the walls down. High traffic rooms’ walls seem to collect markings that need to be scrubbed off or repainted. Gloss paint is easy to wipe off and covers the walls imperfections.
Flat paints make the color look dull. If you decide to choose a bright color for a bedroom you may want a flat paint. The bedroom won’t look so bright with a flat paint compared to a gloss or satin paint. Semi gloss still has a little bit of a shine to it but if you are worried about marking the wall and then cleaning it, semi gloss may be the type of paint you will want to try.
Your personality and lifestyle should play a big part in what color you paint your bedroom wall. If you are unsure of colors you may want to hang samples in your room until you choose.
If you don’t mind painting your room more than once, you can choose the color that you like and if it doesn’t look good in your bedroom, you can always repaint. Just because a color looks good on a sample doesn’t mean it is going to look good on a wall. If you don’t like it don’t sweat it. Who’s going to see it anyway? Repaint when you get the chance. Besides, after you see the paint for a couple of days you may like it more than what you originally did. It may just grow on you.
