Moving into a big house that needs work can be daunting for a lot of reasons – not least of which is the windows! Many large windows to dress can cause some home owners to panic, particularly when there are so many seemingly more important DIY projects to get on with. That is, until you realize that there is nothing shielding the view of your shower from the neighbor’s front garden.
Do not despair. It is time to consider some of your options for window treatments. Below is a guide to some of the most popular options – curtains, blinds and panels.
Curtains are perhaps the most conventional way of dressing windows. You can make them yourself or buy them pre-made. A word of caution – if you have very large or unusually shaped windows, you may struggle to find a ready made curtain to fit. Curtains can add real drama and color to the room with their draped fabric.
Curtains are usually made of two layers of fabric, a decorative outer layer and a lining. The lining keeps the curtains from becoming see-through at night and also provides insulation. If you are concerned about temperature, you can buy special thermal fabric to line your curtains. They can make a surprising difference to heating costs.
Blinds will give a room a clean, modern look. Yet, even the Victorians used blinds. Blinds provide privacy and insulation. They come in a great variety of materials, from bamboo, to linen.
Blinds work very well in places where you want a simple look or don’t want to use too much fabric. They are a good choice for the bathroom or kitchen because sometimes the thick fabric of curtains can retain cooking smells and moisture.
There are two main types of blinds – traditional and Roman. Traditional blinds are attached to a roller. Roman blinds are made of stiff cloth which is folded accordion style. You can buy them made to measure. There are instructions for making Roman blinds yourself, but they can be complicated!
Fabric panels are a very simple way to decorate and somewhat of a cross between a blind and a curtain. They hang like a curtain but are made from very sheer fabric to allow the sunlight to pass through. They may be made from voile, linen or other light fabric. They are an excellent choice for areas where you want privacy during the day but still want to allow light in.
Fabric panels have a simple look but may be decorated with embroidery. It is possible to buy them ready-made or make your own.
