Shopping for holiday items can be a daunting task; it seems like after Halloween, all retail outlets dedicate a lion’s share of their floor space to Christmas themed merchandise. With so many choices, it is easy to see how shoppers can be overwhelmed with it all. The task of finding a few specific items becomes a daunting one when faced with a veritable sea of angels, snowmen and ornaments. Wilmington, like cities throughout the county, is no exception. Shoppers looking for holiday items generally have three types of stores from which to choose: the home décor shops, craft and do-it-yourself stores, and the dedicated holiday venues. Wilmington shoppers are fortunate in that they have some great options in each category.
While home décor stores are fairly common throughout the Cape Fear region, both Kirkland’s and Home Goods tend to devote more shelf space to holiday themed items. Located on South College Road, Home Goods has some truly outstanding ornament and gift items under $15 that look like they cost twice as much. If you are in the hunt for teacher/coworker/grab bag gifts that will impress without breaking the bank, then Home Goods is a great place to look. I was especially impressed with their selection of unusual, yet inexpensive holiday ornaments. Mayfair’s Kirkland’s is the place to go for sprucing up your home with some tasteful holiday décor. From throws to pillows to conversation pieces, Kirkland’s boutique feel is far gentler on the wallet than similar specialty shops. Worth mentioning, as well, is DDT Outlet. While not as holiday-centered as the Home Goods and Kirkland’s, DDT Outlet is home to some truly unique nautical and beach-themed holiday items and is definitely worth a visit during your next trip to Independence Mall.
Do It Yourself
Some of us find the holidays the perfect time to tap into our creative side and create our own holiday decorations and gifts. While not true “craft” stores, both Old Time Pottery and Pottery Plus carry a wide array of craft-type holiday items at unbeatable prices. Old Time Pottery’s selection of vases, candle holders, silk flowers and decorative extras make for a crafter’s heaven. Pottery Plus, on the other hand, provides shoppers with woven baskets, yarn, nautical knick-knacks and outdoor items that will fit into any budget. Affordable alternatives to traditional craft stores, both shops are well stocked. Old Time Pottery is located at the intersection of Shipyard and South College while Pottery Plus is found on Market.
This time of year, kiosks devoted entirely to Christmas merchandise sprout up in mall and shopping centers. In addition to such places, Wilmington is also home to Cape Fear Christmas House and Rudolph and Me. Situated on Sandfiddler Point., the Cape Fear Christmas House is the place to go for unique and one-of-a kind holiday merchandise. Rudolph and Me, located in Independence Mall, is your destination for personalized holiday ornaments.
Whether you are looking for the perfect holiday gift or just something to spruce up your home, Wilmington has something for you. Good luck and Happy Shopping!
