Dancing with the Stars Fall 2008’s season of competitive dance came to an end this evening as the three remaining couples, host and model Brooke Burke and partner Derek Hough, NFL star Warren Sapp and partner Kym Johnson, and *NSYNC singer Lance Bass and partner Lacey Schwimmer, took to the ballroom floor in their last attempts to impress the public. The season’s winning pair will be revealed tomorrow evening. The six dancers took to the floor together in a Samba, while each individual couple performed their own unique freestyle routine. The Dancing with the Stars finale began with each couple choosing their best or favorite ballroom and Latin dances of the season. Then, each of the selected performances were replayed for the audience’s consideration. Brooke and Derek chose their Quickstep and Paso Doble; Lance and Lacey went with the Tango and Mambo; and Warren and Kym selected the Viennese Waltz and Paso Doble.
Then, the winners of the Kids’ Ballroom competition were announced. I’m not a fan of this part of the show, so forgive me for glossing over the exact course of events.
Brooke and Derek opened up the group Samba Smackdown, as Tom and Samantha called it, with a hip-shaking dance. As usual, Brooke looked decidedly semi-pro. Lance and Lacey came next and served up a dose of great entertainment value. Warren and Kym capped off the routine with a fun, energetic, and impressively rhythmic offering. Len called Warren “fantastic” but criticized his footwork, praised Lance’s “energy”, and he called Brooke “the one to beat”. Bruno called Brooke a “dazzling, sexy sizzler of a dancer” and said that “everybody would like to drive that model”. He said that Lance really could be a leading man, and claimed that Warren is irresistable but called the technique “not brilliant”. Carrie Ann called Warren the “most improved”, reminded Lance that he has “one more shot” tonight, and told Brooke that her holds with Derek are “magical”.
Brooke and Derek – Scores: 9, 9, 10 = 28
Lance and Lacey – Scores: 9, 8, 9 = 26
Warren and Kym – Scores: 9, 7, 9 = 25
Celebrity: Brooke Burke
Partner: Derek Hough
The Dance: Freestyle
The Outfit: Light pink off the shoulder dress, tennis shoes; removed to reveal a sparkling hot pink bra and capris
The Performance: That was a lift-a-licious performance! I usually type and watch at once, but I was totally captivated by Brooke and Derek’s energetic Grease-themed performance. Amazing lifts, dancing on the judges’ table, yowza. This is IT. This is THE dance that will go down in season seven Dancing with the Stars history.
Bruno – “You are the one that we all want. You ended up in positions that I’ve only seen in the Kama Sutra. One of the best freestyles I’ve ever seen.
Carrie Ann – “Tonight you brought it!”
Len – “I got all hot under the collar. That, I think, was the best freestyle I’ve ever seen.”
DWTS Scores: 10, 10, 10 = 30
Celebrity: Lance Bass
Partner: Lacey Schwimmer
The Dance: Freestyle
The Outfit: Black LanCey shirts, black pants
The Performance: This one was just ‘eh’ for me. I’m not much of a hip hop fan, but even so, as my husband said, it just “wasn’t that entertaining”. It wasn’t bad, per se, but it wasn’t up to par with Brooke’s dance.
Carrie Ann – She said she loved the beginning and the end, but said that “one little section threw it all off”.
Len – He praised the song selection and said he was “really pleased with it”.
Bruno – He praised their “creativity and wit”.
DWTS Scores: 9, 9, 9 = 27
Celebrity: Warren Sapp
Partner: Kym Johnson
The Dance: Freestyle
The Outfit: Grey suit, red shirt; stripped off shirt to reveal sparkly silver vest
The Performance: I liked the slow and fast variety of Warren’s dance – it showed some good variability. I also loved Warren’s energy and wow, there were some impressive lifts. My husband said “that was a lot of hey, I’m Warren and I’m big. Look how I can hold my tiny dance partner”.
Len – “I know you lack technique” but said “as an entertainer you have no one that touches you.”
Bruno – “With you all resistance is futile!”
Carrie Ann – “In all honestly, of all the routines, that one was my favorite” but noted that they did make a mistake.
DWTS Scores: 9, 10, 9 = 28
I’d like to think that Brooke will take the title, if only because I want to see a women take the Mirrorball Tropy home again this season! I also think she’s the best dancer. However, short of them randomly handing the trophy to a previously eliminated contestant, no outcome will surprise me. Remember to vote for your favorite on abc.com, and tune in tomorrow night to the Dancing with the Stars finale to find out who wins!
