This article is going to discuss what a demon is, and what can cause a person to become possessed. You will learn the signs of demon possession and what happens during an exorcism.
According to the Bible, a demon is a fallen angel. Satan led a large number of the angles in a rebellion against God. When the rebellion failed they re cast out of heaven. The angels became demons and now serve Satan instead of God. Now a demon is known as a disembodied evil spirit that craves and desires to possess a human body and create havoc in the persons life until it is destroyed. They are under the control of Satan himself, and they live in an atmosphere of horrifying evil.
Some characteristics of a demon are, they have intellect, they have knowledge, they have emotion, they know who they are and they have the ability to speak.
In the scriptures, a demon is identified by having the spirit of deviation. This includes fortune telling, tarot reading, witchcraft, horoscopes, channeling, casting spells, and interpreting omens. People who contact the dead by channeling are actually contacting demon spirits pretending to be “the deceased loved one.” Demons have a lying and deceiving spirit. Their only purpose is to lead you away from God and his word.
There are a wide variety of possible symptoms of demon possession, such as a physical impairment that cannot be attributed to an actual physiological problem, personality changes such as major depression or uncharacteristic aggression, supernatural strength, a disregard for modesty or normal social interaction, and the ability to share information that one has no natural way of knowing. There are also spiritual attributes that show demonic influence. These may include the refusal to forgive, the belief in and spread of false doctrine, especially concerning Jesus Christ and his work.
It may be possible to become possessed by allowing ones heart to be ruled by some habitual sin. The sin may become and invitation for a demon to enter in. Some missionaries believe that demon possession also seems to be related to the worship of heathen idols and possession of occult materials.
An exorcism is an attempt to evict demons or spirits from the body of a “normal” human. The exorcism of evil spirits is commonly associated with the ministry of Jesus and the new testament. In order to be freed from a demon, you must be exercised and except Jesus Christ as you Lord and Savior. If you do not do this, the demon may return and could bring others with it. An exorcism begins usually with prayer. Bible verses are then read. The person being exercised, is then anointed with holy water and the demon is told to leave. Most of the time the demon will put up a fight showing its supernatural powers. Sometimes there is levitation, screaming, speaking in other languages that are unknown to the person who is possessed, self mutilation, blasphemies and sometimes, vomiting. Depending on the strength of a demon, the exorcism may last hours or days. After the exorcism the home can be sprinkled with holy water. A prayer of thanks usually follows also.
You can have a catholic priest perform the Roman rights of exorcism which has to be approved by the Pope. Another option is that you can talk to your own church leader. Most pastors have their own version of an exorcism and are more than willing to help.
In conclusion, demons are real. You can be possessed, demons can do physical, mental, and emotional harm to you. If you become possessed you will have to go through an exorcism. Possession is not a joke and it can happen to any one.
