It was recently that my family discovered that there are still good people left in this world. Yes there few and far between, but when you do find that diamond in the rough, it’s hard not to share it with the world. The Department of Social Health Services in Kelso, Washington is our diamond in the rough.
We recently like many other Americans lost our jobs. We were hard working citizen’s working somewhere between 45 to 55 hours a week. We were not looking for any handouts from our Government we were proud to be Americans and we were taught to make it on our own.
Many of you will or have found yourself in our situation. Lost your homes, jobs, vehicles and have nothing left. You may as we have had to do, lean on family to take you and your family in.
We decided after close review of our financial situation to stop by our local Department of Social Health Services department. Located in Kelso, Washington we were very embarrassed to have to walk through the doors, much less apply for assistance.
Many of us need help. Whether it’s food, clothing, shelter, cash, prenatal help. No matter what it might be, The Department of Social Health Services is there for us. Granted the office was full and the lines were long. But I was so impressed with the thoughtfulness of the staff that they won’t make you feel like you are a loser.
You will be given an appointment time that day, and ask to come back that day at a different time. We did and as soon as our name was called we were led to speak with a case worker.
You will then be interviewed and ask questions about previous living situations as well as your new ones. We no longer held our heads down and you should not either. We have all worked and seen bad times but sometimes we all need help.
Some of us all have different situations. Some of you may be homeless and some may have found there pregnant and need help. Or some of us are just out of work and need food assistance to get us by until we find work again.
You will also find that the days of people having to pull out embarrassing coupon books that stand out to other people in the check out line are over. You will now be giving a card. Which looks identical to a debit card.
You will be given a limit that’s been pro rated and each month that you qualify, you can check your balance by calling a number on the card. You will also be able to contact customer service if you need help, from a number off your card.
They also offer Wic.( Women,Infants,Children) Which helps assist Mother’s to be. Mother’s who qualify under department of health and social services criteria, will receive assistance with items such as juice, cheese, cereals, milk etc.
As many of us are aware of, there are those that take advantage of our system. And it makes it very hard for the ones of us who trully need it, now at a time when our economy is hurting.
DSHS in Kelso, Washington has giving me and my family a chance. A chance to eat one more month, a chance to have some dignity left. I congratulate their staff for not treating us like we had a disease but treating us the way we would treat them. With respect.
For those of you in the Kelso, Washington area who may need assistance, give them a call. Or stop by to make an appointment. And always remember, as we have come to realize, Give back. Give back to your community once you get back on your feet. Give to others that are less fortunate than you. As the Department of Social Health Services has done for us. God Bless You.
