There I sat mesmerized by what I had seen. It was 1985 and Madonna was breaking into the pop-culture scene. A movie had been made and no one had any idea how big it would be become.
The film I am referring to is “Desperately Seeking Susan” and with a modest bargain basement budget of roughly $5 million dollars, an unskilled actress, and innocence, a movie becomes iconic.
Desperately Seeking Susan was written by Leora Barish and directed by Susan Seidelman. The movie was released on March 29, 1985 and grossed an unexpected $16 million dollars. The film has a low key cast starring Rosanna Arquette, Madonna, and Aidan Quinn to name a few. Most of these stars moved on to portray bigger and better roles.
The movie is based upon a suburban housewife who has become bored with her own life. Roberta (Rosanna Arquette) is fascinated by the want ads. She finds a series of ads that are entitled Desperately Seeking Susan and soon becomes entangled into Susan’s (Madonna) life. Roberta ends up with amnesia and when she wakes up gets mistaken for Susan. Susan is a free-spirited NYC drifter who is being chased by the mob. Roberta finds the adventure she is looking for and figures out a few more surprises along the way.
Rosanna Arquette won the BAFTA film award in 1986 for best actress in a supporting role and was also nominated for 3 other awards, which included the Golden Globes.
This movie is a romantic comedy that reminds us of our younger years. It will take you back into the 80’s with a rush and flood over you until the ending credits are rolling.
This was the Madonna Movie of all time. This is what people remember about Madonna. She was real back then. Madonna had some substance and was just like you and me. Today I am no fan of Madonna, but in the 80’s she was the coolest!
