As the NFL regular season comes to a close, fans in twelve NFL cities dream of a Super Bowl Championship as their heroes have made the playoffs and are on their way to the”second season”. However, fans in one NFL city should be the most proud of their team.Yes,Detroit,in these flailing economic times bouyed by our failing auto industry, the Lions finally have a record that can never be broken-ZERO victories in a season. This mark of futility may be matched but never broken! Finally something for long suffering fans of the franchise to embrace.
This ignminious feat was not achieved overnight. There was much work behind the scenes for decades to achieve this record. As a fan for only 40 years, I don’t recall the glory days of the leagues infancy where a swashbuckling Bobby Layne ruled. I do know since the ownership of William Clay Ford these stalwarts,,chosen by magement have helped to achieve this distinction in one way or another. Ready: Spiderman Allen,Tom Beer,Jack Concannon,Harry Colon,Gary Danielson,Dan Dickel,Nick Eddy,William Frizzell,Jimmy Giles,Tommy Hudspeth,Sedrick Irvin,Ron Jessie,Jeff Komlo,Larry Lee,Errol Mann,Useless Norris,Steve Owens,Ernie Price,Bill Quinlan,Rudt Redmond,Tony Semple,Altie Taylor,Mike Utley(sorry),Tommy Vardell,Herman Weaver,Jim Yarbrough, and finally,Micky Zofko.
Now ,they can’t all take credit for this unbeatable record. Russ Thomas and especially Matt Millen should rejoice. The two of them ultimately brought the franchise to the brink of history and over the brink. Congratulations gentlemen. Mr. Crabtree awaits in the draft.
Alas, the NFL Draft. This two day event has become more of a spectacle than the start of the MLB season.College and pro football fans alike salivate over the prospect of players from their state school or alma mater are peeled slowly off the draft board giving some validation to the school, state or even former graduates of that instituition where all at one time or another mingled with that “student athlete”.NFL fans are on the edge of their couches(Jet fans edge of ledges) in anticipationof the saviors name being read for their Team. As as a Lion fan this next draft is particularly exciting for me. No more Russ Thomas,no more Matt Millen, the new guys are in town! Wait. The new guys? The new old guys? The promoted Millen underlings? With no Head Coach? No matter,I will sit on the edge of my couch waiting to hear the savior be called. “Withe first pick in the 2009 NFL draft, the Detroit Lions select………..Homerun,Curtis Granderson and the Tigers trail 4 to 1. Good luck fellow Lion fans,someday…..someday.
