First grade kids love making Christmas decorations to give to family and friends. They love gift giving, and they enjoy creating something of value to give to loved ones. I recall making Christmas decorations when I was in first grade, and I loved the treasures I made to my grandmother and my favorite teachers. This Christmas I have been sharing the crafts I recall making in first grade with my daughter. She is currently in first grade, and she loves making easy paper candy canes and adorable craft stick reindeer. My kids are using the decorations she crafts to embellish our Christmas tree and our stair railing, and they plan to give several of my daughter’s Christmas decorations to their grandparents, cousins, teachers, and friends. I think they make fantastic Christmas present decorations, and I still enjoy making them almost as much as I did in first grade.
The following paper candy canes and easy craft stick reindeer are highly colorful, and they are as cute as can be. Kids in first grade love creating something useful and decorative to give to those they love. Give the following easy Christmas decorations a try, and begin make lasting memories with your kids. They are fun and extremely easy to make, and your first grade kids will absolutely love the results they achieve with very little adult assistance. Chances are they will remember making these easy Christmas decorations and someday share the joy of crafting and giving with their kids.
Easy Paper Candy Canes
Paper candy canes are incredibly easy to make, even for first grade kids. Begin this easy project by having the kids color between the lines on either wide-ruled or college-ruled paper. They can color every other space between the lines a different color, or they can skip a line to create red and white paper candy canes. Once the entire lined sheet of paper is filled with colored stripes, begin rolling the paper at a bottom corner. This step will require a little adult assistance until the kids get the hang of it. After the entire sheet of paper is rolled, affix the corner with a small piece of clear tape, and wrap a few inches of the narrowest end tightly around an index finger. It will begin to unroll and naturally form the curved cane. Once your kids make one of these easy Christmas decorations, they will want to make many more.
Easy Craft Stick Reindeer
Craft stick reindeer are also fun and easy for first grade kids to make for Christmas decorations and gifts. First grade kids love making these cute decorations to give to teachers, friends, parents, and grandparents, and they can be used to decorate the family Christmas tree. Each craft stick reindeer requires three four-inch wooden craft sticks, one red pompom, two plastic craft eyes, clear drying craft glue, and a six-inch length of gold cord for hanging. Kids will also need a pair of scissors for cutting the gold cord, and a sample will be very helpful. If kids are able to see a finished project they will be able to design it with very little help.
The reindeer face will look like an upside down letter A formed with three craft sticks. Begin by having the kids glue two craft sticks together at the ends to form a V. Cross the center of the V with a third craft stick. This upside down letter A will form the face and antlers of the reindeer. Glue the red pompom to the point of the upside down A to form the nose. Lastly, glue on the eyes, and allow the glue to dry completely before handling. Finish by tying the ends of the gold cord together, and loop it around the center of the horizontal craft stick. These finished Christmas decorations made by first grade kids or kids of any age can be used for decorating Christmas packages, Christmas trees, railings, and any other location that can use a little holiday cheer.
