Although hundreds of thousands of greeting cards are sold during the holidays many greeting cards are for other events and special occasions. Whether you’re sending cards out for a special occasion, or you just want to say “Hi” to a friend, you want the greeting card to impress. The cards you send will cost little and make a huge impact when you decorate them yourself.
Have you ever compared the difference between cheap cards and more expensive types? Often, the costlier cards have glitter, a real piece of ribbon or other fine embellishments. The less expensive card is generally plain. You can purchase cheap cards, though, and make them look much more expensive by embellishing them yourself.
There are many inexpensive craft items you can use to decorate your own cards. Fake jewels, sequin, glitter, ribbon, yarn and similar things can make a card come to life. Use fake jewels to create a dog collar for a card that features this pet. Or, cut felt to make a cute hat for the mutt. There are many different ways to change the look of the ordinary card.
Paper punches are inexpensive and allow you to punch shapes of foil, paper or thin cardboard. These shapes can be glued onto the card to embellish it. You’ll find the punches, which create shapes of hearts, stars and more, at any craft store. The punches can be used time and again to create the perfect look for your greeting card.
Make tiny bows which can be glued onto the hair of a girl in the picture, or around the neck of a cat or dog featured on the card. Use a fake jewel to create a center for a beautiful flower on the card or even as a sun, shining overhead.
Tiny jewels can be used to make flowers, raindrops, tears, or even a collar for a puppy. Sequin can be used to make a border around the existing picture or as the centers of flowers. Create fabulous rainbows by aligning various colors of sequin into rows.
There are no limits to the various embellishments you can give most any card. Say you are sending a card to a friend and that card features a lighthouse on a beach. You can use stickers to create seashells, seagulls or similar things. Create a theme by attaching tiny, flat wooden shapes to the card. The shapes could be clouds, a beach sign or even a bush. Paint the lightweight shapes then glue them to the card.
Besides stickers, jewels and wooden shapes you can also use ribbon, roping, lace, shoelaces, colored twine, yarn, buttons, real sand, glitter, scraps of cloth, decorative pieces of paper, and similar items to embellish your greeting cards.
Kids especially will love gluing on things to give cards character and dimension. They’ll enjoy creating cards for family members, friends and even the teacher. It’s cheap and fun to create your own card embellishments and the recipient will be thrilled.
Look for leftover craft supplies at yard sales and flea markets. Since only a scrap of ribbon will be used on a card why purchase the whole roll? Instead, you can often find bits and pieces of craft items that will save you money and help you embellish the cards the way you want.
Purchase some cheap cards today and have fun adding your own embellishments and enhancements. Buy inexpensive craft supplies or use things you already have at home to embellish the cards. You’ll enjoy it so much that you’ll never send an ordinary card again!
