Evander Holyfield vs. Valuev takes place on December 20th to decide the WBA Title. The boxing match pits Evander Holyfield against Nikolai Valuev on Pay-Per View to decide the World Boxing Association Heavyweight Title. It puts Evander Holyfield in a position to attain the biggest title in boxing for the 5th time in his boxing career, as he seeks to also become the oldest contender to win the title. George Foreman is currently the oldest title holder, as he won the WBA Heavyweight belt when he was 45 years old back in 1994.
On the other side of the ring against 4-time WBA Heavyweight title holder Evander Holyfield, is Nikolai Valuev. Valuev is a huge Russian boxer, who will tower over Holyfield at the height of 7 feet tall. With the full name of Nikolai Sergeyevich Valuev, the Russian boxer won the World Boxing Association title back on December 17th of 2005. He beat then three-time defending WBA champion John Ruiz, and defended it again against Russian Chageav who took it from him in a 2007 majority decision fight. Valuev regained the WBA title on August 30th of 2008, by defeating John Ruiz again, and now takes on Evander Holyfield very shortly after having attained the title last.
The defense of a title this quickly doesn’t happen very often, and Nikolai Valuev deserves credit for being willing to put the WBA title on the line so quickly after winning it at the end of August. This fight against Evander Holyfield is all about the promotion and the thought of a huge pay-day when it comes to the Pay-Per-View ticket, with a lot on the line for both boxers. First there is Holyfield, who at the age of 46 is looking to re-attain some past glories that have left him in recent years. Valuev indeed has a lot to lose in this fight, because there is the very real possibility that there would not be a re-match if Holyfield was able to take the title away from him.
The hope from everyone involved in this WBA title bought, is that fans will tune in and see a good fight between the two boxers. If someone wasn’t taking into account the past history of Holyfield, on paper, this looks like a very one-sided fight favoring the younger, quicker, and bigger Valuev. It will not only be interesting to see how this fight turns out, but how many people actually decide to tune into the fight and give it a chance in the first place. Everyone will know soon enough, as the fight taking place in Switzerland will be starting by the end of the night.
