Celebrities make looking good look so easy. But of course they have a stylist, hairdresser, masseuse, manicure and pedicure technician and even a makeup artist to help them look that way. The celebrities that I most admire manage to look good every day when they are out and about just like everyone else, shopping or taking the kids for a walk.
One of my favorite celebrity hairstyles is that of Reese Witherspoon. With long layers and staggered bangs this celebrity can wash and go – after a little bit of gel, a round brush and a straightener. This hair style is perfect for those with straight hair, and would like to keep it long. The staggered edges come across as so casual like she only spent a minute on her hair. The long layers give volume and allow her the versatility to pull it up for up-do or more formal hair styles. Clips, buns, twists, braids, just about anything can be pulled off with this hairstyle and it looks like one even I could do. As a busy working mom and actress, I think it is perfect not only for her face but her lifestyle and many of ours (moms) too. Sexy, easy, and versatile.
Faith Hill is another celebrity that has a hair style that fits both busy moms and celebrities alike. Shortened from the long mane of shoulder length wild curls to a version of the bob sported in the December 2008 issue of People Magazine. On the cover it is a side part with long bangs and short bobbed layers. I think the part to the side is a little too far over, but other than that this look is relaxed curls that could take her from walking out the door in the morning, to the recording studio and even out on the town at night with hubby Tim McGraw. The layers are sharply angled giving versatility to her look.
How does she get this look? By taking advantage of her natural curls. Using styling gel, rounded bristle brushes and a blow dryer she tames natural curls into a more polished look. With her face, she gets it all, long or short and they all look great. But this one is one of my favorites on her.
My first introduction to Rihanna’s music and beautiful face was on the Tyra Banks Show as a relative unknown. Her recent appearances at awards ceremonies show her sporting one of the most popular celebrity styles – the bob. Rihanna’s version of it is a rounded bob, shorter in the back and longer in the front, and then straightened. A longer version of the bob, but equally as effective and sexy is Eva Longoria’s shorter style, introduced with the new season of Desperate Housewives.
How to get her look? Relaxing balm is spread all over her hair and then blow dry straight with a flat brush. Set with hair spray. For Caucasian hair you could probably use straightening products, my favorites are from Redken. This look seems polished, but not over done and maybe even one we busy moms could achieve.
Ali Larter was unknown to me until her appearance on the television show “Heroes” and I am glad that although she is a good cop/bad cop on the show and a genetically engineered “twin” of her former character that she is still on the show. Her hairstyle is just right for day or night and for those with long layered hair could tame natural curls or add lift and volume to flat straight hair. I like her long soft waves of curl that is achieved by using hair spray and a 1 ½ inch curling iron on one inch sections of hair. After curling with curling iron, finger comb, smooth the front with a brush and finish off with hair spray. Now how easy it that? It is also a great look for showing off those newly acquired summer highlights.
Katie Holmes really started the short hair/bob hair style movement with her neckline/jaw length cut several months ago. At first I wasn’t thrilled with it, but it has “grown” on me. It seems to be a look that goes from professional to casual, day to night and that takes only minutes. It also gives her a more mature look, which fits perfectly with her new found motherhood.
To get this look you may not even need product, just a good blow dryer and a medium sized round brush. Blow dry flipping at the ends. Blow dry the front portion by pulling it towards your face and the part to the side will appear naturally.
Model Heidi Klum still makes heads turn with a simple yet elegant hairstyle of long hair and “eye-skimming” bangs. There are slight layers to this style and it would show off the blonde with dark underneath hair color that is so popular. The bangs skim the eyes then get longer as they skim down the sides of her face. To get this style, blow dry with a rounded brush pulling from roots to bottom. Flatten long ends with a ceramic straightener. Don’t use the brush or straightener on the bangs it gives a “bump” instead of a smooth bang look resting on the forehead. Easy, breezy, beautiful Cover Girl.
Gwyneth Paltrow recently lightened and brightened her look with a longer version of the bob. Just barely touching her shoulders it appears all one length with a center part. She has also lightened her hair, just in time for spring and summer. The new length and color seem easy to do and keep and a style that just about anyone with straight hair could achieve. It also allows for versatility in style with the long length still there and the lightened color keeps her petite face and figure from being overwhelmed by hair.
How to get this look – start with a good cut and color. Then using relaxing balm, frizz free serum or straightening products straighten with iron after only blowing partially dry. While drying finger comb to make it straight but not without volume.
Angelina Jolie’s maternal look has softened, starting with her hairstyle and color and moving on to her Madonna smile. Her hair style looks exactly like mine does when I take the time to smooth and almost straighten – so it is definitely a look that just about any woman with long thick hair could achieve. Her hair is a little darker with motherhood, and tamed with long almost one length layers that softly curl under at the ends. A side part shows her face, without any distraction of bangs; her oval shaped face doesn’t need it.
How does she achieve this look? Blow dry hair with round fat brush starting at roots and moving towards ends. This adds volume to the roots. Side part or center according to your face shape and natural part. Divide hair into one inch “portions” and using 1 ½ inch curling iron curl ends. Spray with hair spray before curling. Finger comb, flip over to finger comb. Spray hair spray throughout hair and smooth the front around face with a brush. Top with hair spray again and you are done. This also allows you to have a great look if later on in the day you need to pull it up or create a pony tail.
Sandra Bullock has such a fun personality in many of her movies, and her hairstyle should show it. Long layers with long blunt bangs really do make her look younger and the long layers allow her to do just about anything she wants to with her long lock. She sports and easy curl to the long layers looking sexily rumpled but still put together.
How does she get this hairstyle? Applying gel to her hair, then finger combing the bangs to straighten. Dry hair half way dry and then divide into four sections. Thicker hair may need to be divided more. Take each section, add some hair texturing paste, and then braid them into fat braids. Let hair finish drying then finger comb and set with hair spray.
My last hairstyle tips are in general, and used by many celebrities. First, if you have bangs, use a little powder on your forehead to keep it from getting oily or hot. It also keeps your bangs dry. Next, be careful how much product you apply to your hair. In most cases a standard amount for short hair is about a dime’s worth, longer hair needs about a quarter but this all depends on the product. When straightening your hair, avoid starting at the root, but move down and then all the way to the ends. Starting at the root makes your hair lay flat and lifeless. Lastly, ask your hair stylist which products she recommends, from styling products to brushers, curling irons or straighteners. They know your hair best.
