I was lucky enough to have received a gift card from my husband for a massage at Firori in Houston, Texas; and even luckier to have been able to experience this luxurious spa during the day when it was not crowded. As I approached Fiori I noticed the Tuscan-style courtyard with an outdoor pool and stone walls, and knew the interior would not disappoint.
Staff and Interior
As soon as I entered, I was greeted by the professional and friendly front desk staff. I was shown the locker room and asked for my shoe size so they could provide slippers that would fit me perfectly. Each locker contained a robe – the most comfortable robe I’ve ever worn, several towels, a shower cap, and even a plastic laundry bag in which you can put your wet swim suit . The locker area is open and there are no changing rooms, but you can change in one of the two large bathrooms if you’re uncomfortable getting undressed in front of others.
In the ladies locker room there is a sauna, a round sitting chair where you can sit and put on your shoes, two sinks, two bathrooms, two showers, and a plethora of toiletries like cotton swabs, cotton balls, hand and body lotion, body scrub, mouthwash, brushes, hairspray, mousse, disposable razors, shaving gel, brushes, a hair dryer, and even deodorant. There is also a display with samples of some of the facial and body beauty products they sell. The decor throughout the spa (including the locker room) is lavish with gorgeous chandeliers.
Once I was in my robe I went back to the lobby and was told to go upstairs to the treatment area. As I got to the top, another staff member held the door open for me. They really did make me feel special at Fiori. I sat in the waiting area for only a few minutes before my massage therapist arrived and took me back to the treatment room. There was soft, relaxing music playing and the massage therapist asked if I had any areas in particular she should concentrate on. Like most women, I tend to hold onto my tension in my shoulders and neck area.
The massage therapist was friendly but not intrusive, and knew when I wanted to cease conversation so I could relax. In the past, I’ve had massage therapists laugh and tell me they’ve never worked on anyone so tense, and then proceeded to hurt me in the process because of their harsh massage technique; but at Fiori, my massage therapist managed to work out the tension with no pain. She obviously had years of experience and had been trained well.
After my massage I was given a glass of water and was taken to the quiet room. I thought this was silly at first but after five minutes, I didn’t want to leave – ever. The quiet room has four couches which are more like mini beds with comfortable cushions, pillows, and even a blanket. Classical music was playing and there were a plethora of magazines on the center table in which to read. I became so relaxed that I started to fall asleep – something that I rarely do, not even at night.
Thermal Pool and Jacuzzi
After 20 minutes I decided to check out the heated thermal pool and Jacuzzi. I went to the basement level (otherwise known as the grotto) and saw that no one was there ,so I decided to go for it despite my swearing I’d never get in a bathing suit again. I quickly took a shower to rinse off the oil from my massage then put on my swim suit and robe, and went down to the pool praying nobody would be there. Fortunately I had the place to myself.
I stepped down into the pool thinking I would just stand there for a few minutes and get out, but something magical happened when I got in; I started swimming. I didn’t think I’d swim again due to sun allergies but I suddenly felt free inside the heated pool and started to act like a child swimming for the first time. I had a big grin on my face when I discovered there were cameras on the ceiling; though I could have been embarrassed, I decided to just have fun and enjoy my spa day. I just couldn’t stop smiling in the thermal pool; perhaps it was the minerals and salts that made me so content. With such a positive experience, I decided to get out and try the Jacuzzi. The water was hot but not scalding and it was relaxing with the jets on my feet.
I then went back to the locker room and tried the steam room which was very hot, and that was before the steam even came out of the jets. Once the steam started to puff out I had to leave because I found it hard to breathe, but that’s just me. I know some people just love saunas.
I finished my Fiori spa experience by taking a shower in one of their oversized tiled showers. Shampoo, conditioner and body wash are provided but the pumps were not working on the shampoo and conditioner bottles. Fortunately I had taken a wooden spatula (to scoop the body scrub) in with me and used that to get the shampoo and conditioner out. Each was scented with an herbal mint that was invigorating, but I noticed the shower had begun to clog and I was standing in an inch of water. Those were my only real complaints, and when I told the receptionist while checking out, she apologized and said they’d look into it.
I used all of their toiletries and blew dry my hair with the most amazing hair dryer. My hair is like me, it retains water, but with the Fiori hairdryer my hair was dry in just a few minutes. While curling my hair (yes, they even provided the curling iron), I looked over at the clock and saw that I had been there for three hours – three hours. I was just supposed to get a 50-minute Swedish massage. I enjoyed every minute of my time at Fiori and was grateful for opportunity to try such a luxurious day spa. Thank you to my husband!
Fiori is expensive but you get so much for your money, and if it had been warmer outside, I might have used the outdoor pool as well. If you’re looking for a fabulous spa in the Houston area, then I definitely recommend Fiori.
