Linen or flax is probably the most comfortable fabric money can buy. As it is made out of the flax plant, which produces fibers from the stalk of the plant, the flax clothing requires extra care than other dress materials. These naturally produced yarns are responsible for the absorption of moisture from the skin during summer, and in addition to keeping the skin cool it also gives a very comfortable feeling when worn. One disadvantage of flax clothes is that they are quite rigid. If the flax clothing is bent, then it will remain bent and this gives rise to unwanted wrinkles. Another disadvantage of wearing flax clothing is that the more the wearer sweats, the more number of wrinkles come up on the fabric.
Therefore, it becomes absolutely essential to read the washing care label before putting it for wash. Although, flax clothing is known for its toughness, it is important to look for special instructions that may have been given in the label and which may be necessary to follow before washing it. Sometimes the garment is not completely made out of flax and the clothing may be a blend of flax and other types of materials. It would be advisable to follow the instructions carefully as otherwise the flax clothing may get damaged beyond repair.
Usually, flax clothing is washed in the washing machine using warm water but it is usually preferred you hand-wash your flax clothing or better still if you give it to the dry cleaners. It is observed that by washing the flax clothing by machine or by hand repeatedly makes the clothing soft and less wrinkles, but dry cleaning keeps the flax clothing new and crisp.
If you choose to hand-wash you flax clothing you will have to follow few instructions:
–Place the flax clothing in a small tub and fill it with warm water and lather.
–Rub the flax clothing well so that the lather spreads on the entire material.
–If there are stains then the first thing you can do is rub the stain immediately with cold water. However, the method of treating the stains depends on its source.
–You can also remove tougher stains by soaking the flax clothing in laundry detergent.
–Sometimes the stains can also be removed by sprinkling talcum powder of rubbing white vinegar on the stain.
–If the stain is due to some oil then it is advisable that you give the flax clothing to the dry cleaners.
–If you want to use a stain remover then you could first test it on some dummy flax clothing to see if it harms the material. First you have to apply the stain remover and then let it absorb for about five minutes, then rinse the flax material. If there is no change in the color of the material then you can use the stain remover directly on the stain. After some time rinse and launder the flax material.
–Once the hand-washing or machine washing is completed, you can air-dry the material and later iron it before wearing.
–It is advisable that the flax clothing is not dried using a dryer, instead it should be air-dried.
–If you want to iron the flax clothing, you could do so when the material is slightly damp. Also make sure that the flax clothing is ironed till it’s smooth, not dry.
By following these simple instructions you can enjoy wearing your flax clothing for many years.
