In this economy a lot of people are looking for jobs. The recession has put a lot of workers out of their jobs. My husband and I are grateful to have jobs now, but we’ve both been out of a job in the last four years, so we know what the job search is like.
My husband worked at the same company from 1971- 2007, so imagine what a shock the job search process was for him! He really wrestled with the fact that most job searches are done on-line now. In his day, you walked into an office and shook hands before you even filled out an application. “Unless they really wanted you,” he told me, “Then you didn’t even fill out an application.”
I, on the other hand, considered myself a professional job-hopper. I was a bartender for over 20 years- no benefits, no pension- so I would leave one job for a quarter more an hour somewhere else. I was well-acquainted with the job search process.
My two all-time favorite free job websites are Monster and Flipdog. You would have to have been living under a rock not to have heard of Monster , and in my opinion it’s the number one free job website. Flipdog is good, too, but I think you get more visibility from Monster. I would still look at and post a resume on Flipdog. Sometimes Flipdog has postings that Monster doesn’t.
Don’t waste your time on careerbuilder.com. Everything on careerbuilder.com is also found on Monster and in your local newspaper. I don’t think careerbuilder.com ever gets their own postings- they just copy form other sources.
Craig’s list has a lot of job postings. I’m not a fan of Craig’s list because I only answered an one ad on Craig’s list and it was totally bogus. That was enough to turn me off for good! I don’t want my personal information getting in the wrong hands. Needless to say, I’m very leery of Craig’s list. If you’re really desperate to find a job, and you find a posting on Craig’s list, do a lot of research before you answer the ad.
Rochester help wanted posts jobs in Monroe, Orleans, and Wayne counties in New York State. Rochester help wanted has a lot of unskilled labor jobs. If you’re looking for a part-time job at McDonald’s and Arby’s for minimum wage, you can find out which locations are hiring at Rochester help wanted . Same goes for housekeeping and cashier jobs- Rochester help wanted is the place to find out who’s hiring.
If you’re looking for a job in the $100K+ range, I’ve heard The Ladders is a good free job website. I will freely admit to never having made $100K+ a year, and therefore have no personal experience with The Ladders . Maybe someday, right?
If you have a specialized skill, do a goggle search for specialized free job websites. For example, there are tons of free job websites that post trucking jobs. Don’t forget that some companies are always taking applications on-line. A few examples are Sears, Home Depot, and Wal-Mart.
Job searching can be an emotional, exhausting, and discouraging time for many. Please, hang in there! Remember, you only need one job. And who knows? It could be that next application!
