About a year ago, I wrote an article n how to build a Goldfish pond in your Yard. Now, lets talk about general maintenance of it.
Maintaining a pond is not that hard to do. All you need is a little effort and the right chemicals. This article will discuss some helpful tips.
Many individuals tend to over feed their Goldfish. Basically, one handful of food once a day is enough. If you have children that feed them, divide up the food evenly. Too much food is not only bad for the fish but, your pond as well.
It is very important to keep your ecosystem in balance. Your plants and fish will work together to the level of bacteria in your pond. However, it is important to clean out your filters every two day. This may increase, depending on the droppings of leaves in the fall or seedlings in the spring. Your filtering system will have a collector for large things like leaves and branches. It will also have a small very fine filter that needs to be cleaned with regular water and then replaced.
If you have a new pond, it could take up to ten weeks to form a proper balance between the fish and plants for bacteria control. The two working together, will do a good job. During this process though, your water quality might suffer. Be patient. To help you get started, add the right amount of beneficial bacteria. This bacteria might need to be added a few times over the season. It will help both fish and plants.
It is also important to maintain the proper water level in your pond. Each part of the country is different when it comes to an evaporation rate. You can place a small mark for water level on your pond. Whenever it dips below that level, just add some more water.
Weeding out plants is very important. Just like a regular garden, you have take out extra plants from time to time. Too many plants means too much algae. To do tis just simply reach into your pond and pull them out by the roots. Sometimes this will stir up the bottom but, it will soon drop back down to the bottom of the pond.
Fish will help reduce the maintenance to your pond. They won’t do it all but, they are very helpful in eating and cleaning out some algae. Many pond builders use fish for that reason. Besides, they are pretty to watch. When the temperature drops on the water below 55 degrees, don’t worry about feeding them as they will become dormant.
Controlling Algae might be the number one concern of most pond owners. By using the proper amount of chemicals as explained on the package or box, you can quickly get control of it’s growth. The most important thing is to recognize it and deal with it before it gets out of control.
If you have blooming plants, like water Lillie’s, they can always use a little fertilizer. Don’t be afraid to use fertilizer. However, always follow the directions on the box. Blooming plants can make your pond explode with beauty.
Don’t be afraid to add things like old logs for the fish. One or two strategically located is enough for the fish.
A little effort and the right chemicals can go a long way in pond maintenance.
