Gorton’s Beer Batter Fish Fillets – A Product Review

by yup tab

Recently, I was in the mood for some fish fillets for my dinner meal. In the frozen food department, I discovered Gorton’s Beer Batter fillets. These are the type of fish fillets that you don’t want to microwave. It is even recommended that you just place them in the oven and set the temperature for 425 degrees. It takes about 22 to 25 minutes to bake them. After about twelve minutes, flip them over.

Gorton’s has been in business since 1849. They even have their own web site located at www.gortonsfreshseafood.com. The Gorton’s Fish market got their start in Gloucester, Maine. Gloucester is located in the cradle of the fishing industry. People were fishing there even before the first Gorton boats took to the sea inn 1849. Slade Gorton came to the area in 1832. He is considered the founding father of the Gorton fish company. The story of his success is do to his wife Margret Ann. The story goes that Slade was out of work because of a fire. His wife took their life savings and bought him a boat and announced “You have been out of work long enough. Now you are back in the fishing business.” Their story of success takes off from that point. Clarence Birdseye of the frozen vegetable fame, helped the Gorton’s fish industry with packing frozen fish in the 1950’s. This allowed for Gorton’s to move their fish across the states.

New health guidelines recommend that your weekly diet include two servings of fish or seafood. The Beer Batter fish fillets have 0 grams of trans fat. Serving size is two fillets per serving. This amounts to 103g. Each serving has 260 calories of which 170 is from fat. Total fat is 19g , 29%. Saturated fat 4.5g 23%. Cholesterol 25mg or 8%. Sodium 680mg, 28%. Potassium 115mg, 3%. Total carbohydrates 15g, 5%. Dietary Fiber 1g, 4%. Protein 8g. Vitamin A 2%. Vitamin C 4%. Calcium 2%. Iron 4% rounds out your vitamin intake.

There are two other frozen fillet meals also. They are the Lemon Pepper Fish fillets and the Garlic Herb Fish fillets.

The Beer Batter fish fillets are made with that crispy pub taste. They make a great meal when you serve them with potato’s, mixed vegetables and a hot roll. I prepare the fillets by placing them on a rumpled piece of aluminum foil that I place on a low sided flat pan. After preheating the oven, I place them on the middle rack. Like the instructions says, flip them after about 12 minutes. You will see them sizzle on the tray. when you remove them, simply place them on a paper towel to help remove any access oil from them. I then try to serve them while they are still hot.

If it is a fish sandwich that you crave, just place them on your favorite pieces of bread with your favorite topping. If you don’t want a topping, they taste just great without anything else on them. One good thing that I like about Gorton’s fish fillets is that you can quickly reheat them, after you remove them from the refrigerator. They taste just as good then, as they do when you first cook them.

A box of Gorton’s Beer Batter fish fillets has 10 fillets in them. Each box weighs 18.2 oz. (516g). You can easily identify the box because it has the fisherman with the yellow raincoat on.

So if you get the opportunity to try some, take them home, follow directions, and enjoy a delicious meal.
