DETROIT — It’s just a little over a month away from the grand opening of Greektown Casino’s new 30-floor hotel tower, attached to the new parking garage. Construction workers are putting in long hours to make sure it’s ready for opening day. Most of the exterior work is already complete as crews are now working inside.
I was given a personal site tour of the new hotel and was greatly impressed. This hotel has completely raised the bar when it comes to quality and convenience.
The hotel will feature 400 total contemporary-designed guest rooms. There will be 29 luxury two and three room suites. Each room contains “sleep easy” beds with 300-thread count sheets. All rooms are equipped with a 42″ plasma television and high-speed wireless internet access. Workstations come with ergonomic desk chairs, an iPod docking station and much more.
Additional features of the rooms are a deluxe mini-bar with snacks and beverages, a two-line speaker phone, a daily newspaper delivered upon request, in-room coffee and tea maker, in-room safe and an iron board.
Three restaurants are located inside the casino complex – The Alley Grille (currently open), Bistro 555 (opening soon) and the International Buffet (opening Friday).
Two dance clubs are being included in the new hotel and casino complex. The first is Shades GoGo Lounge, located on the first floor of the hotel. The second is Eclipz Ultra Lounge, located in the casino. It is for the younger, contemporary crowd.
For those who want to host a banquet or convention, there is 25,000 square feet of meeting room space with accommodations for up to 1,500 people. Each meeting room is equipped with sound, music, telephone outlets, lighting and internet connectivity.
The location of this new hotel was no mistake – it’s in the heart of Greektown. Dozens of restaurants and shops are located right next door. There is a Detroit People Mover stop on site connecting the hotel and casino to other parts of the downtown district.
The Greektown Casino Hotel exceeds the standards set by the Motor City Casino Hotel, The MGM Grand Casino Hotel, The Westin Book Cadillac and the Fort Shelby Doubletree Suites. It’s just nice to see all these new hotels open in downtown Detroit.
The official opening date for the hotel is February 13, 2009. It will be a few days past the closing of the auto show. However, the hotel is already booked for many events including the NCAA Final Four when it comes to Detroit in April.
