There are many fun ways to make a “green” friend or beloved happy at the holidays. Helping the planet at the holidays is a fun way to serve the environment. It feels great to know your efforts to give “green” gifts may help clean the air, feed the birds or help the planet in so many other ways.
Cloth Shopping Bags Filled with “Green” Treats for the Earth
Buy a cute cloth bag to use for groceries and fill it with “green” treats. The dollar store I go to sells cute green cloth bags with a picture of the planet imprinted on the fabric. The bag costs only a dollar and is sturdy and has a solid bottom panel.
Fill the bag with bird food, flower seeds, gardening tools, a gift certificate to a gardening store, and a certificate to spend a day gardening with a friend.
Plant a Garden
Plant some bulbs or flower seeds to create a garden. This is a lovely gift for anyone, but especially for someone who is too busy to garden or who cannot garden due to health problems.
Certificate to Do Chores so Friend may Garden
Gardening is very therapeutic. So if a friend loves to garden but doesn’t have the time due to having children or a demanding job give a certificate for a day of gardening. You will do the friend’s chores such as cleaning, laundry, carpool, babysitting, or other chores and your friend will have a peaceful day outside gardening and communing with nature.
Hold a Garage Sale Together and Donate Proceeds to Environmental Groups
Give a certificate to help a friend organize and hold a garage sale to clean clutter out of the home. Then donate the proceeds to an environmental group like www.ArborDay.org that works to help save the planet via planting trees.
Plant Tree Seedlings
Plant tree seedlings to help the air quality and create homes for birds and other wildlife. Looking at trees is very relaxing too. With a gift of tree seedlings you give future serenity to a friend. If the tree seedlings you provide bear fruit you will also help the wildlife find food.
Share a Day Cleaning the Environment
Take a day together and clean the environment. You could simply go for a walk in your neighborhood picking up garbage. You may also want to go to a park, a lake, or the ocean and clean up refuse there. America is strewn with too much litter. Cleaning the environment is a good deed and can make for a fun day outdoors with a friend.
So think “green” this holiday season and work to save the planet with you holiday gifts.
