I actually saw a video of Valentino on Youtube and all I could think of was, just how does any bodybuilder get arms that look like that? They didn’t seem real at first; in fact, they looked like a double head hammer, where the biceps are located. After using and abusing steroids for years in an attempt to get that “perfect” physique that some men dream about having (lucky for them they don’t; it might turn off their wives or girlfriends), Valentino eventually developed a major infection in his right arm. He even tried to get rid of the infection himself, developing hematoma which could not be drained and had to be treated professionally by a doctor. But is it worth it for a man to even want to have biceps that look, well, weird?
The photo of Valentino on his website shows a nice looking guy who although short in stature (he is 5′ 6″ tall) weighs 265 pounds, all muscle. It may seem disproportionate but since he was good looking he was still able to attract the girls. As with other professional bodybuilders, he had the thighs to match the biceps. So when TLC (The Learning Channel) decided to do a documentary on how his arm exploded, well, much more about Valentino was exposed: his past usage of steroids to help pump up and look bigger, as well as his attempt to get his arm back to normal using the same needles he used for the steroid injections. That does not make any sense. He reputedly used Synthol, which is an intermuscular fatty acid which is then easily injected into the muscle through the use of a syringe. Then the Synthol provides a fatty volume to the muscle. Sounds easy enough but is the stuff really safe? No, because a nerve can accidentally be hit with the needle causing paralysis to the muscle fibers where the injection is being administered. Plus, the fatty acid can accidentally get injected into a vein or artery which then flows to the lungs and cause any number of serious health problems, including a pulmonary embolism.(1) Steroids are not worth the health risks they carry, and Valentino learned the hard way.
On the positive side, not all bodybuilders use steroids and neither do they have 28″ biceps (average waist size for a young woman). I know I could never be interested in a guy whose biceps were bigger than my thighs; it just doesn’t do anything for me. But Valentino remains an interesting and colorful figure in professional bodybuilding. He will definitely be well known for having an arm that once exploded.
