Salt Lake City was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847 who traveled what is known as the Mormon Trail. The city was originally called “Great Salt Lake City’ after the salty inland lake in the desert. Many of the historic buildings of Salt Lake City were built in the early 1900s, including Eagle Gate, The State Capitol and others. The city’s population nearly tripled between 1900 and 1930. Much of the wealth in the city was created through mining the mineral rich veins in the region. The Canyon Copper Mine opened in 1905, producing large amounts of this metal. Historic hotels in Salt Lake City include Peery Hotel, Motel Monaco and Carlton Hotel.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries Utah’s mining districts brought eager speculators to the districts. It wasn’t until 1910 that a quality hotel was constructed to accommodate the miners who had found wealth in the rich veins of the hills.
